To be fed up of the "I'm a key worker" line now

Chishelled · 28/09/2021 08:13

Fair play, I do understand that not every key worker is pulling this out at opportunity and that not all key workers are acting like entitled selfish twits, plus the fact DP and I (although only on day two) are both NHS - him as a doctor and me within mental health.

Our entire local facebook page is full of "I am a key worker, I need to get petrol, people are being so selfish" BUT why do key workers expect to be prioritised for petrol now, particularly when many of the ones posting work in our local hospital which is a 20 minute walk away??

It's just all adding to the scare mongering and hype by trotting out the "I'm a key worker, I need petrol priority...[it's going to run out again], plus plenty of people are having to commute back to work due to the end of furlough and the fact that offices are well and truly reopen - are their jobs seen as lesser?

I propose on the spot fines for anyone who uses the phrase "I am a key worker" to get preferential treatment from this point forwards [unless of course we go back into Lockdown again]

@Kleptaklunky if you can't work from home you do.

The government has the people exactly where it wanted them to be. Turning against each other and worshipping their new Gods aka NHS aka key workers. I personally don't quite believe the current fuel shortage and empty supermarket shelves are caused by panic buying, rather that it's just another government tactic to deflect from their own incompetence. It was the same at the height of the pandemic - blaming people for spreading Covid when government advice was contradictory (eat out but stay home) or for booking Covid tests 'unnecessarily' when there were hardly any tests available.

I wonder how many of you would change their minds if you urgently needed to use the nhs this week or if an important doctor/Denist /etc appointment is cancelled because they can't get to work. They are only valuable to you when you need them, that's the problem. I actually disagree, I think those on the absolute front line and those working with the elderly, vulnerable, emergency workers and working with the disabled should get priority. They are saving people's lives, keeping people safe. Sorry but that job is more important than some other jobs.

I've been waiting nearly 12 months for 5 joints replacements. I've had appointments months back months and months. I still think it's unreasonable

BTW was in an ambulance a few hours ago - which stopped at a normal petrol station to get fuel

Then was told can only have £30 - they take £90 and will usually use the entire tank in a shift, and the person in the petrol station suggested they go to another station and get £30 there and then a third to finish the job

I get that they want more people to be about to have some fuel - but this is a PHYSICAL AMBULANCE - blue lights on the top and everything - they aren't stockpiling FFS

Sorry to hear that. But I doubt that is down to the doctors etc themselves. Plus it has absolutely nothing to do with this thread. But to make a weak link- surely if these people can't get to work then your wait will be even longer?

ancientgran · 28/09/2021 21:55

@hulahooper2

Yes I’m sick to death of nhs key workers particularly, some do admin and you’d think they were brain surgeons
But some of them are brain surgeons.

Well there are 4 drs involved. So no.

You're the one that said that you hope people don't need the NHS. I already do. My wait is already 'longer'. I want my dp able to go to work and earn enough money to pay the mortgage.

Pixxie7 · 28/09/2021 22:27

Absolutely agree the problem is most people who are key workers either don’t need to mention it. The ones that do tend remind you are often working in offices etc.

RandomCatGenerator · 28/09/2021 22:29

I’m sorry you’re having such a shit time @seb342, what sounds horrible. I hope you and your colleagues are doing ok.

I think I said need them in an emergency where they couldn't get to you/see you because they had no petrol or couldn't get to work. I don't see how your argument about waiting lists is remotely linked to my point or has anything to do with the fuel situation right now. I am sure other people's DH who work in the NHS also have a mortgage to pay.

So, power station employees can't get to work anymore. Can't run their cars as they are not NHS and not entitled to fuel. What now? People who work in food processing too. Can't get to work, so shop shelves are bare.
ScrumptiousBears · 28/09/2021 22:49

I'm loving the posts on Facebook. Each one tries to out do the other in terms of importance and need to get petrol.

Same. Is sad to see. If you have a car, you need fuel. It is that simple. Lockdown was about "protecting the NHS".... no one is saying "get no fuel to protect the NHS", and rightly so. Patience has run out (and patients will run out if they can't get fuel and get to their appointments).
ancientgran · 29/09/2021 09:23

Siameasy · 29/09/2021 09:54

One on my Facebook now going on about being entitled to petrol saying “it’s a good thing I can work from home”. So you don’t need petrol then, you’ve saved money and how key actually are you?! Many people would love to work from home-this person has had smoke blown up her backside a bit much I think

I’m a nurse. I never once used it so that I could jump a queue in the supermarkets. I also wouldn’t use it for petrol as I don’t need the stress of someone getting upset that I am in uniform with a NHS ID badge. If I can’t see patients because I don’t have petrol then so be it. Maybe a jealous person with petrol can go and do it instead of me. Unfortunately I have had colleagues unable to work in the last few days. Thankfully I filled up as usual on pay day which should last me a few weeks.

coughKeyworkercough

I'm panicking about the fuel and I don't even drive! I even work at home! Should have seen them chase me out of the local petrol garage when I was caught sniffing around the pumps ;) /l'll take my rubbish joke and leave now.

We are all part of the rat race, is how I see it. All jobs are important.

Explosivefarts · 29/09/2021 17:30

NHS workers are no more important than others looking after vulnerable people. Such as carers .

KittyMcV · 29/09/2021 17:31

YANBU. It's irritating and implies that other occupations are unimportant.
