Head talking about moving to homeschooling as staff are running out of fuel

This is one of our local secondary schools. South England. No fuel in our town, within 30 miles, or maybe more. DH is a teacher and he has about 2-3 days worth of petrol left. The Head of his school is putting in plans to close year groups and move to homeschooling again. Is anyone else in these dire straits? AIBU to be a bit scared? We didn’t panic buy because the government said not to, and now we’re completely stuck.

Oh how surprising that this has turned into a teacher bashing threat by some posters. It’s always the work shy teachers doing everything they can to get out of work Hmm

Yes, because they are all genuinely terrified of having to supervise their children again and the fear manifests itself like this. Don’t blame teachers, blame the government. It’s not up to the teachers, nurses, taxi drivers and police office to sort out their mess. If there’s fuel, I’ll get it, if there isn’t, it’s back to Zoom. When enough parents (voters) complain, dear old Boris will get his backside into gear.

I’d like to believe it’s fear, but some people just don’t like teachers and still think it’s an easy 9-3 job.

I don’t agree with the anti teacher rhetoric on here, in fact I think it’s appalling. However, it goes both way. As a parent. I’m not terrified of having to ‘supervise’ my children, the issue is more that I’m physically not there to supervise my children as I’m out at work. I am terrified of losing my job, yes. Plus more lost learning, and the fact that one of my children sobbed every day that schools were closed in lockdown 2…
Believe it or not I love spending time with my children and ‘supervising’ them isn’t the issue. It’s the fact that I’m out at work all day 🤷🏻‍♀️.
Of course I don’t blame teachers for any of this, it’s absolutely the fault of the government. But the idea that parents just don’t want their kids under their feet is offensive too.

@RedToothBrush

So the first option is to close the school, rather than try and organise car sharing...
We have a work policy of not car sharing since covid so that the whole workforce doesn't get ill at once. I imagine alot of other places have the same. Use your common sense.... if you have any.

Well said. I'm a retired teacher but in embarrassed when teachers on here come out with that comment about parents ' just not wanting to supervise'.

My daughter's a nurse. My DGD isn't school age yet. But if she was, and school suddenly closed, getting petrol for her car would be the least of my DD's problems. Her ward would be down another nurse due to child care, on top of the ones who can't get in as they have no petrol.

FontSnob · 28/09/2021 21:33

I also agree with the not wanting to supervise their kids bit being not helpful. Although to be honest, I’d rather teach my yr 11’s than my own two.

Suja1 · 28/09/2021 21:48

I live two minutes from the nearest petrol station. I had to queue more than two hours to reach a pump. I did need petrol, (down to the last 20) and most people appeared to have had almost empty tanks looking at the spending on the pumps. I worry that care workers and health staff will be struggling to get to work. But, apparently, it's all under control!

They're a bit thick, too.

If the teacher is teaching remotely, they are working.

Orangejuicemarathoner · 28/09/2021 22:21

@takenforgrantednana

would it be too much for people to car share? put 5 in a car and thats all your days covered with one person doing the driving one day a week or is it just to simple an idea?
how is one driver supposed to go miles and miles out of their way to collect other passengers when they don't have enough fuel to do a direct journey?

And car sharing is banned under our covid risk assessment anyway. 5 people in one car one day, 5 members of staff all testing positive 3 days later......

@Gilly12345

I wouldn’t be surprised if home schooling starts at all, the country is in crisis.
we started online teaching again today

SpecialchildSupermum · 28/09/2021 23:09

My ds goes to a Special School about 15 miles away. The council pay for his taxi there but they have said that as from Thursday they can’t get him to school due to the problems with fuel! I have no fuel in my car either so I can Drive him to school either!! What a nightmare

Backwaterjunction · 29/09/2021 13:07

Whoever talked about the fuel crisis of the 1970s getting more media, well I want to say the following
1 I’ve not heard ANYONE but you mention it
2 it did last a couple of weeks it lasted 6 MONTHS
3 it wasn’t caused by panic buying it was caused by oil producers holding onto supplies
4 it affected THE WORLD not just 1 country
