Worrying about DS’s sickness

My 2 year old (almost 3) started with vomiting once on Tuesday evening, on Wednesday he was very quiet and off his food. On Wednesday night he was sick all over his bedding, then on Thursday morning he threw up multiple times and was visibly unwell (pale, lethargic and off his food again). He had a nap that afternoon then woke up seemingly much brighter.
That night he was sick on his bed covers again…Friday he threw up once but was much better in himself, Saturday he was sick a very tiny bit after he’d had some lunch and Sunday (yesterday) he wasn’t sick at all, day or night.
Today he’s been in really good spirits, playing, running around, eating and drinking fine, then this evening while eating his dinner (pasta) he started throwing up again and it kept coming, basically the whole contents of his stomach seemed to come up Sad after we’d cleaned him up, he was running around playing again, no temperature and no sign of discomfort. He’s now in the bath splashing around and giggling, not lethargic at all, he’s not dehydrated either.

I was very unwell on Friday with it, although I had diarrhoea opposed to vomiting, I also had a fever and chills, along with body aches. I felt pretty terrible. I’ve been left with a feeling of nausea that comes in waves and a weak tired feeling. But I’m eating okay now.

We’ve done covid tests, all negative.

Do we need to call the GP or 111? Or is this a lingering virus that needs to run its course? I’m fed up with washing sick covered clothes and bedding Sad

Norovirus is doing the rounds. Sounds like that what you all had

CottonSock · 27/09/2021 19:43

My dd had similar at this age with awful diarrhoea too. I think she did get a stool sample done, but nothing came back. I fed very plain food for a week or two. I would keep a close eye, bit he sounds well in himself so probably a good sign.

Bobsyer · 27/09/2021 19:45

I think as he's ok in himself I wouldn't do anything. It sounds like a particularly unpleasant virus to me.

SeaToSki · 27/09/2021 19:47

If he is drinking lots of liquids (and keeping them down) is weeing properly and doesnt have a temperature or a rash, then leave it another day or so. Push the fluids.

ShowOfHands · 27/09/2021 19:48

When my eldest was that age, she always looked like she was better, did too much and then started being sick again. She would bounce back much faster from the second onslaught though.

He sounds like he's on the mend but his stomach is still a bit delicate. I'd give it a bit longer. Keep him hydrated and follow his lead re food.

Polkadotskirts · 27/09/2021 19:49

He’s currently running around screaming at the top of his voice, very hyper and nowhere near tired. Climbing on everything and blowing raspberries. So in himself he seems completely fine. It’s bizarre.

I think sometimes their stomachs just need a bit more time to a settle. If you've been ill too then it's clearly a bug rather than anything sinister and will work its way out.

Polkadotskirts · 27/09/2021 20:36

@thedarkling what could be something sinister? I have health anxiety so my mind goes automatically to the worst case scenario.

I agree with the PPs who’ve said young kids sometimes need more time for their stomachs to settle.

I’m not sure if there’s any actual science/evidence behind this but when we were little my mum would always have us avoid milk and yoghurt for a few days after a stomach bug, as she said we’d be sensitive to it. She may have been talking nonsense though.

Dinoroaraus · 27/09/2021 20:49

@SickAndTiredAgain my mum did the same. And toast for breakfast.

Merryoldgoat · 27/09/2021 20:51

Have you kept him dairy free during the bug?

Mine always got temporary lactose intolerance during tummy bugs and if I didn’t completely eliminate dairy for 3/4 days it would just exacerbate the problem.

Polkadotskirts · 27/09/2021 21:11

Thanks, I’m feeling a bit calmer now. Hoping it passes soon.

My DD was like this a few weeks ago, sick on alternate days for a week. She was saying her tummy hurt too but I don’t know if she can verbalise the difference between tummy ache, nausea and hunger. She was also fine in between times.
I just went gentle on foods for a few days after and plenty of fluids.

Polkadotskirts · 27/09/2021 23:16

@Merryoldgoat yes we’ve stopped giving him milk and yogurts at the moment.

It’s not the weekend OP, kids always decide they’re going to be ill on Friday evening or the night before an important event WinkGrin
