To think the petrol 'crisis' was conspiracy?

Ok this couple we'll be so far fetched that I truly am being unreasonable to even think it, but .....

Is there any chance that the media coverage regarding the petrol supplies was some kind of collusion/conspiracy to make us all panic buy and be concerned about where our next lot of fuel is coming from, so the government can swoop in and save the day with thousands of visas for drivers from other countries?

Rather than them having to communicate the same intention regarding visas but with their tail between their legs following brexit?

Ok go?!

Don't be so silly, of course it's not a conspiracy.

It's just a plain and simple fuck-up.

AGreenerShadeofKale · 27/09/2021 15:15

Pressure via the press release from BP as mentioned above is my favoured conspiracy.
Then BBC liking to get the boot in over Brexit.
Then the Johnson government just generally never acting like grown ups because they cba.
Then the public acting like lemmings.

It's a cascade of nonsense.

@MahMahMahMahCorona

Oh - and many countries across continental Europe have HGV driver shortages because during the pandemic no-one was able to train and pass the tests. I believe 60k shortage in Germany and 120k driver shortage in Poland? I'll find my sources and it wasn't just Mr Shapps.
Except the shortages are not noticeable in continental Europe...wonder why that could be.
waybill · 27/09/2021 15:35

Except the shortages are not noticeable in continental Europe... wonder why that could be.

Perhaps the citizens in those countries haven't been panic buying the minute there's the merest hint of a slight shortage.

BeyondMyWits · 27/09/2021 15:45

It's financial...
Supply problems... demand through the roof... suspend competition laws... cartels form with price fixing top of the agenda... fuel prices go up.... why fix the issues... keep demand high... keep prices rising (and taxes rolling in )

Now all we have to do is work out which crony has their fingers in the fuel business.

SquareYellow · 27/09/2021 15:46

@Strangevipers

Due to Covid not as much fuel was used and was sitting around

Fuel goes off

Gone off fuel can't be sold

Unsold fuel looses money

Government love money

Fuel must be sold quickly before it goes off

Enter the media !

I like this explanation and hadn’t thought of that!

Or: there haven't even been hints of slight shortages.

It's plausible. Could imagine this as part of the plot in The Thick of It. And ministers are quoted on saying how accurate that show is. The initial leak, the media leaping onto it and the resulting change in consumer behaviour to allow an unpopular policy (/admitting defeat on Brexit/immigration/visas) to go ahead unchallenged.

It's easier to write about Katie Price, strictly and Love Island, honestly nobody in the media is making up a petrol conspiracy. Too much effort. Did you come up with this theory while browsing Facebook by any chance?
Polkadots2021 · 27/09/2021 16:45

Just googled a French German and Swiss newspaper and noones going on about petrol. Isn't this because of Brexit causing lorry driver shortage and also that factory in France that supplies 60% of our power or whatever having a fire and not being able to supply anything til next year?

mustlovegin · 27/09/2021 16:47

It could have been orchestrated by the media or the Left. Not the government

CoRhona · 27/09/2021 16:51

If this was a conspiracy to make our government look better, that was a complete failure.

Having said that, there is very little that could achieve that aim Hmm

Cuddlyrottweiler · 27/09/2021 16:54

I think they're testing what they can make us do. We're like performing bears just dancing to their tune.

sashagabadon · 27/09/2021 16:56

I think it’s a combination of haulage companies not liking the government suggestion they increase wages, a glut of fuel, brexit hating media, people loving the drama, social media ramping it all up, a public that relies too much on their cars and winners ( although not instigators) electric car companies.

sashagabadon · 27/09/2021 16:57

Plus Covid not creating enough clicks anymore so another “crisis” to drive clicks on news websites

HighNoon · 27/09/2021 20:50

YABU. As if this shower of a "government" 1. Has a plan. 2. Is capable of executing any plan. They're genuinely and sincerely fucking useless.

Batshittery · 27/09/2021 20:56

Ok Go? Hmm
No, and we did not 'all' rush out and panic buy. I certainly haven't

TheHouseILiveIn · 27/09/2021 21:21

I actually don't believe them when they say there's no shortage. They lie so much even when they know we know they are lying, and do it with no shame, that I believe the opposite of anything they say.

Come to think of it, this lying thing is so egregious...I would be sacked if I was found out to be lying just once ....why do we accept this from the people running our country, which is surely one of the most important jobs?Confused

I found it strange that it all kicked off right on pay day for a lot of people. People are more likely to fill the tank right up. Also wondered about it coinciding with the Labour Party conference, Keir Starmer’s first one, making sure the media attention is somewhere else.

Who knows.
