To send my dd to nursery tomorrow with green snotty nose?

So I'm in debate with my mom about this. My dd is 3 at the local school nursery. She started 2 weeks ago and already has caught a cold. She was off all last week with it. She's got some additional needs and she does seem to struggle with illnesses it takes her ages to recover from them.

She's pretty recovered now but still has green snot coming from her nose otherwise she's alright in herself. My
Mum thinks she should stay off till she's completely clear of every sign of anything. I'd like her back in tomorrow.
The main reason I want her in is she didn't see any other children during the pandemic really except the odd breif interaction at the playground. She loves it and it seems a shame to miss it now she just has a bit of a snotty nose.
AIBU to send her in tomorrow?

I would test for a cold that's had a temperature and lasting ages.

Wtf86 · 27/09/2021 07:36

I would definitely test for those symptoms and PCR tests can show positives for a number of weeks after. She had a temp so had a symptom. Covid presents differently in children. If PCR negative send her in! Green snot is not a reason not to send her in but a temp and no negative PCR you shouldn’t

There are loads of colds around at the moment. The official symptoms of Covid that require a test have not changed so I would not test without one of them. Was the temperature a fever or just a bit warm? When it is officially announced that you test with cold symptoms then fine, test. But until then it is not required. It is likely those have tested positive with cold symptoms also had one of the many colds doing the rounds at the same time.

I did not have a cold. I had Covid. I developed a temperature and lost my sense of smell and taste. My initial symptoms were cold symptoms. Stop being in denial.

My DC2 has the same OP. I done a pcr test as the cold came with a nasty cough.
Still snotty with a cough, i called nursery and asked about it and they said so long as he has a clear test, they want him in. The attitude was ‘there is more than enough tissues to go around’. My little one has still enjoyed nursery regardless of the cold, he definitely needed nursery after being in lockdown for so long!

Our nursery asks you don't send them with a temp or new continuous cough. Snotty is fine - they are all snotty, and no way I would test DD for that. While it may well be a symptom of Delta, it's entirely unfeasible to test everyone who gets a snotty nose while going into winter. Especially nursery kids. DD's whole nursery would have had to have them at the moment! It's not workable.

If she had an actual temp she should really have/have had a PCR though.

Namechange1million · 27/09/2021 08:26

As soon as they start nursery they tend to catch something new weekly! I'm not sure if my daughters current sniffle is new or the tail end of the previous week's one! As long as she's not got a temperature it will be alright

Yeah exactly. My dc has a snotty nose literally more often than not right now. I just wouldn't subject him to a PCR on a weekly basis, and I'm not sure they'd allow it anyway without the official typical symptoms. Honestly, some people have lost all sense of perspective.
HSHorror · 27/09/2021 09:16

Pongo- thats not right though! You need to pcr for a temp and should not send back in after one until you have done one. A lft doesnt count! (They miss 50% of positives which is why they arent for symptomatic people.

Both my children had colds almost non-stop at nursery so I’d not have kept them off for that, unless they were actually unwell with it and needed to rest.

However, I would have done a PCR test with a temp - even if they only had it briefly. DS has had more pcr tests than the rest of the family put together as he is very prone to getting a temperature.

Bunnycat101 · 27/09/2021 10:24

You have to be pragmatic. Small children get colds in winter. Chances are she’ll be permanently snotty between now and March. A cold went round my daughter’s school within a few days of then going back. If they had to stay at home for a cold, they’d be no-one in. Even during the height of the pandemic schools were saying come in if a cold.
