To want to improve my year 5 child educational knowledge

Inspired by another thread which is currently running.
My year 5 child attends a state school and is very behind on all of the basics.
We intend on sending her to a very good school in secondary (the same as her brother) and I'm really worried about how she will manage at the school. I'm determined to help her with learning so she is not so far behind in secondary.
Does anyone know how I go about this?
I was going to make sure she reads to me every day, completes her times tables, fractions and ensure she can tell the time.
Does anyone know of any good resources I could use? Apps or books that would help us on this journey? Thanks

You could get some of the KS2 SATS workbooks (Amazon sell them) for maths and English - they set the work into really small topics and will help you assess where the knowledge gaps really are. Encouraging reading is also a great idea.

Thanks for responding magnolia beige
I'll have a look now!

You could get a 'Twinkl' subscription. They have some useful assessment material and some of the worksheets are good- you just need to pick abd choose what you're using.

Some of the children at my school really enjoy tables practise with an App called RockStars.
She needs to be able to tell the time both on digital and analogue clocks, and to be able to use timetables and things like TV schedules - working out how long a programme lasts, what time the bus reaches a specified place. She also needs to understand scales and intervals- weighing scales with intervals marked but not necessarily numbers. Using a temperature gauge or thermometer helps with this too.
We've used CGP books in the past and found them useful - you can get them online or in WH Smiths.

Thanks Iloveanowl
I have tried Twinkl in the past and I didn't quite get on with them. I have ADHD so if it's not an easy system to use, I give up!
I'll have another look though...

Please don't pressure her.

5 year olds have a full on school day. If she's behind, I'd spend more time on trying to work with the teacher to find out why.

Natural conversations are best. If she shows an interest in something, explore it. If she doesn't, don't push it. She is so many years away from secondary yet and has time to get there.

Your right on focusing on reading, times tables (though they don't start these until year 2 bear in mind) and telling the time as if they can nail these the latter years of primary are easier for them.

Just please remember she's only 5. (I say this as a teacher)

She’s in year 5, not 5 years old.

Christ's sake. A teacher? Read the post properly, then. She's in y5 not aged 5 🥴

Thanks for responding but yes my daughter is in year 5. Totally agree with your advice for a 5 year old though! 😊

I tell my children over and over again that reading is the best thing for every subject!! Try and find some book series she would enjoy and read, read, read.

Cozytoesandtoast00 · 26/09/2021 17:31

MerryMarigold thanks.
She does enjoy reading so planning to focus on that!
