To give up drinking booze totally (perimenopause hangovers)

I don’t drink much anymore- maybe once a month at most and I have extended breaks of a few months too. But when I do it’s literally awful - lying in bed this morning after having a few glasses of Prosecco at a party and I have a terrible headache, nausea, anxiety etc. I didn’t have that much to drink.

I am 48 and in perimenopause and I think that is what has tipped me into deathly hangovers - I don’t even really enjoy drinking anymore either. Has anyone else stopped completely? I feel like I am at that point now-it’s taken me a while to get here.

Aibu to just knock it on the head? I have kept drinking as a social thing I think but now I am not even bothered about that!

@StormzyinaTCup wine seems to be the worst for me to be honest- I feel truly dreadful after a couple of glasses!

I stopped for exactly the same reason. The hangovers went on for days and made me sad and anxious. It was a very good move. Feels good to have made a solid decision about something that was destabilizing me.

It really is shit isn't it?

My issue is that my close friends are all professional drinkers. I don't want to have to get new friends Sad

Are you sure they are just hangovers? Sounds a bit like a migraine, although I can't tell the severity from your post. Either way, sounds not worth it.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 26/09/2021 11:38

And what is it with the anxiety??! Since going through the menopause mine is horrendous and I’ve never experienced that before.

DrManhattan · 26/09/2021 11:54

I totally cut it out a few years ago. One of the best things I have ever done. Dont miss it at all xx

BillMasheen · 26/09/2021 12:01

Fuck. I’d never made the anxiety connection till now.

I’ve cut right back to a couple of drinks a week. From a couple every night, and am feeling loads better for it. But have spent weekends fretting about stupid stuff.

Suddenly makes sense.

MeredithGreyishblue · 26/09/2021 13:12

@BillMasheen I had to take a day off the other week it was so bad. I drank on the Sunday and wasn't well until the Wednesday. It was truly horrible.

BillMasheen · 26/09/2021 14:07

Wow @MeredithGreyishblue. That sounds so similar to me.

I tend to have a couple of drinks on a Friday evening. And that’s it. And I now am connecting feeling shite, anxious and downright irritable all day Saturday. It is only just starting to lift.

It's shit isn't it? Thanks to the peri-meno I've now had to completely give up caffeine too, because of it making me anxious. Can't even have a nice cup of tea to start the day! Decaf doesn't wake me up properly, so I spend the whole morning feeling sleepy. Just wtf?!
