To complain to GPsurgery?

I have just been released from hospital following sepsis connected with a UTI. The worst problem was my GP fitted a catheter two weeks ago, told me she was making an urgent referral to urology, but it sat on her secretaries desk until yesterday as only the sole secretary can do the in a practice of four doctors and 6,000 patients. Meanwhile I was rushed to hospital, as the practice failed to spot I was slowly going into sepsis. A friend, who was a former nurse begged me to phone 111 - I am so glad I did, because it was discovered just in time. I was already at risk of circulatory collapse, was dizzy and had a high grade fever with rigors.

I know GPs and nurses are not miracle workers, but they brushed off my symptoms as anxiety. The consultant was so angry at them.

AIBU to complain?

Yes, if they sat on the referral letter for so long and were dismissive of you then I think a complaint is fully justified.

Go for it. They need to be more responsive. They’re are busy but need to prioritise properly

JamaicanJamboree · 26/09/2021 00:29

There is no excuse busy or not.
They need to urgently work out how to prioritise emergencies at the GP surgery.
Complain OP, they might cause someone’s death next time.
I’m so glad you received emergency medical care in time.

Yes I think you should.

No advice I'm afraid but I feel for you as the exact same thing happened to me last winter I got sepsis from a uti and only just made it to hospital very scary hope you're on the road to recovery it takes a while.

I too got sepsis from a UTI and this was pre-pandemic and the GP was useless then. I called the ambulance after being turned away with merely a prescription of antibiotics days before from the GP. I had told them they weren't working and I was getting worse not even a phone call to check me.

Absolutely not unreasonable. Hopefully they would pick it up anyway when the discharge letter comes through, but you should definitely let them know that you didn't feel listened to.
I work in a GP surgery, but would never tell someone not to complain if they feel they've had bad care. We always learn from our mistakes (I hope!) and complaints can be used to improve care for everyone.
I'm so sorry you've had a a bad experience and hope you're feeling better.
