Impressing as a penultimate interviewee... on a Monday

Happy Friday/Weekend!

It's certainly been a long week.

I have an interview in the next few weeks, I'm the penultimate interviewee, at a time of 2.45pm, and I really want to impress!

Any tips for a penultimate interviewee? I'll be the 5th person out of 6 on a Monday...

Any way that I can use that to my advantage?

Hope the 6th one doesn't turn up so you're more memorable Grin

You need to leave a lasting impression. So be confident, but not showy or arrogant, When answering questions, try to refer to the company/job role and show how you will fit in and what experience you’ll bring. Show you’ve read up about them and that you know them. Look at any company values and revise them. Sign up to any newsletters or site (if free) to show you’ve had a good look around the company.

I’m going to be doing my first interview in a more senior position in a couple of weeks and these are the things I’ll look out for. I’m a bit excited to be choosing someone myself. I’m good with first instincts, and our last assistant turned out to be an arrogant little shit who only chooses tasks he wants to do, not daily tasks he’s supposed to be doing.

Good luck!

Have confidence in the organisation and the interview panel that they can compile a relevant shortlist and assess each candidate on their suitability for the role?

Somewhat depends on the sector and role but I always ask:

What they think makes the company culture special
What development and progression opportunities exist within the business
if they have any reservations about my ability to do or passion for the role

Wear a bright colour somewhere in your outfit. And old trick but it works, literally makes you stand out.

Don't forget to say I rather than we when giving examples. So 'I delivered a multi million pound project on time and blh blah blah' rather that 'we'. Bit of a crap example but hopefully you know what I mean. Really own your successes so they cam see what you can deliver.

Depending on the industry it’s possible they have already interviewed the strongest candidates on paper (recruiters often invite the strongest candidates at the beginning) so that means bringing out more of yourself that isn’t on your CV. Plan STAR examples; tell them how you prefer to work (linking it back to the job), and really impress with STAR based examples from your extracurricular interests.

But also, make sure you pull out what the team did too. Eg the team delivered a multi million pound project. My role was, insert role and how you engaged and communicated with the team.

My dressing tip is wear a small, but shiny, brooch or pair of earrings. Something eye catching but won't distract the interviewers.

Good luck, let us know how you go.
