Blame the government!

All these threads having a go at people for panic buying fuel are really getting on my tits.

Panic buying is a logical response to panic buying. People are going to do it and it is a foreseeable side effect of a crisis. Don't blame them for doing the logical thing.

Instead, blame the government who got us into this mess in the first place by recklessly pursuing a hard Brexit without knowing or caring what the consequences would be.

This is nothing to do with Brexit. hmm”

Hmm. According to PM programme today, over 20,000 HGV drivers returned to Europe as a direct result of Brexit. That’s a lot of (skilled, which people forget or choose to overlook) people.

User45829057 · 24/09/2021 20:59

The media are loving stirring all this up but at least Covid has been put on the back burner a bit. It's a bit like threads on here, wind them up and see them go.

Marchingredsoldiers · 24/09/2021 21:04

Blame the government. I live abroad. We have no fuel shortages here. The media can't report it if it doesn't exist.

It amazes me the crap that the uk puts up with from the tories. All this chaos is not a series of unfortuate events, but consquences of poor, yet deliberate decisions.

People have also overlooked how poorly these skilled workers are paid. They've been leaving in droves for years and we've watched our regular drivers go and get replaced with agency drivers because people won't work for the wages that they are being offered and I don't blame them. This problem has been brewing for a long time and anyone that deals with a supply chain will tell you the same thing.
DismantledKing · 24/09/2021 21:06

I blame the Government, the fools that voted for them (and continue to vote for them), and the membership of the Labour Party that gave us Corbyn as the only realistic alternative.

Theworldisfullofgs · 24/09/2021 21:06

It's quite a lot to do with brexit. If it wasn't they wouldn't be thinking of u turning on visas

KurtWilde · 24/09/2021 21:41

@seb342

But we are not in a mess with fuel because there is no fuel shortage, or at least there wasn't until the media and the public made one today.
Exactly my thoughts too.
maddening · 24/09/2021 21:41

Blame the media, they run the government anyway

Thecurliestwurly · 24/09/2021 22:01

Divide and rule is the tactic if the Tory bots that frequent these threads, but it isn't working anymore as they can't keep up with the barrage of people saying THE GOVERNMENT IS AT FAULT. Not boomers, or snowflakes, or 'selfish' people worried about getting to work or feeding their family, (so are ensuring they do all they can to make sure they won't struggle). Go on other forums, and where it used to be very 50/50 in favour of for or against the Tories, it feels more like 85/15 against. People have definitely changed their mind. It's just a shame we are stuck with them now for the next few years.

Why in God's name did people think BJ had the experience and work ethic to become a good leader is beyond me.

Thecurliestwurly · 24/09/2021 22:04

Exactly. There are other factors at play, like working conditions and pay, but you can't say Brexit wasn't a factor if they are thinking of u-turning on visas.

Blame the media until the media publish anti immigration, anti EU , anti Megan then 1/2 the people in this country lap up the media message!

People really need to realise how they are manipulated by the handful of people who own the media in this country!

Both these comments are very true. There is no real democracy in the uk while there is such a biased press.

Billandbob · 25/09/2021 05:42

Of course it’s to do with bloody Brexit! 🙄

Spiindoctor · 25/09/2021 06:13

Why do you want poorly paid foreigners to come and do the shit jobs over here. If lorry drivers and careworkers were paid a decent wage they're would be plenty of Brits to do the work .

I think it's quite racist and supremacist to demand that poor people come here to make your life easier and cheaper. If costs of care homes and deliveries (food etc) go up to cover better wages then that's a good thing.

Remainers want others to do their shit work.

LadyWithLapdog · 25/09/2021 06:26

Remainers want to have fuel to get to their jobs. Some may even be shitty jobs. Now how are you going to work this one out? Of course I blame the government and the brexit voters. No, I haven’t got over it as it’s getting shitter by the day.

@seb342

But we are not in a mess with fuel because there is no fuel shortage, or at least there wasn't until the media and the public made one today.
Exactly. There's no fuel shortage at all. This was caused purely by BP announcing 5 closures, in reality they shouldn't have said anything and just put a sign up at those forecourts. Instead the media got a hold of it and it's caused chaos. We are not running low on fuel.

Who do you think sets the wages? The fundamental problem is that capitalism drives wages down.

I saw no Brexit campaign trying to argue to leave on the basis of better pay and conditions. It was all about sovereignty abd stopping foreigners. Those campaigning for leave want to dismantle workers rights.

LadyWithLapdog · 25/09/2021 06:39

Maybe not running low on fuel as a country but individuals are running low on fuel. Why should we do the rounds of all fuel stations to see where there is some? Same for food shortages. Why shouldn’t the media print it? This isn’t Eastern Europe circa 1985.

RancidOldHag · 25/09/2021 06:41

@CorrBlimeyGG

Agreed, also in the context of petrol I wouldn't call it panic buying. People aren't lining up with cans, they're just filling up their cars. Maybe a bit earlier than they usually would, but it's not a loo roll scenario!
They showed people with cans on the news last night.

I really hope people have safe places to store it - not in houses/attached garages.

And yes, it's panic buying. You can't 'prep' and stockpile petrol,(because it is volatile) so it has to be extra buying at point of perceived crisis.

Gyredjk · 25/09/2021 06:44

DH has to fill up cans for his boat engine and lawnmower, loads of things run on petrol. We store it in an outbuilding.

Islamorada · 25/09/2021 06:44

Hard brexit 🤣

LadyWithLapdog · 25/09/2021 06:44

Even if it’s “panic buying”, it’s not like you’re going to drive around to waste it and make space for more. You panic not having enough in the tank to see you through a week’s commuting. I wonder if we’ll be encouraged to WFH again.

Spiindoctor · 25/09/2021 06:46

I saw no Brexit campaign trying to argue to leave on the basis of better pay and conditions. It was all about sovereignty abd stopping foreigners.

Well I saw plenty about lack of jobs for locals, lack of housing, overcrowded schools. Obviously it didn't affect your level of society so you were all right Jack.

Megthehen · 25/09/2021 06:48

Import cheaper workers, undercut current wages, get the benefits system to take the strain, don't waste money training/re-training = capitalist dream and a degradation of our way of life for a few decades now. For all those people now being paid more for these important jobs in transport, care etc about time too.

Spiindoctor · 25/09/2021 06:48

Who do you think sets the wages?

The companies who want cheap labour - also the companies who don't want to go to the bother of training up local people cos they get them ready to work for min wage from abroad.
