...for only six days and they gave her one hundred tampons.

One hundred tampons.

And asked, 'Will that be enough?'

Cause they didn't know if that was enough...These are our world's greatest minds. They are literally rocket scientists.

100 tampons. One hundred tampons...

I’m going to have that stuck in my head all day now 😂

Still1nLove · 24/09/2021 15:19

When was this?

MrsRobbieHart · 24/09/2021 15:21

Sorry, it wasn’t clear from your post- how many tampons was it? Grin

Sorry, hit post too early!

Humpthree · 24/09/2021 15:26

@thetaleunfolds it's so catchy isn't it! Her YouTube version is even better:

They didn’t though. Apparently an engineer asked her if that was the right number for a week, but there is no other context given around whether it was a serious considered question or just someone throwing out a number without even thinking because they wanted her to confirm.

She wasn’t actually given that many because clearly she gave a more appropriate number.

Still, makes a more fun story.

JaneJeffer · 24/09/2021 15:28

In case of a Mark Watney situation?

I thought this surely has to be a joke!
But no. It's half true.

Drivingish · 24/09/2021 15:30

Love it, even if they had no clue about numbers needed surely they could see that would mean changing a tampon every hour and a half, including through sleep, is that genuinely what they think women have to do? Who even needs the loo that often?

Humpthree · 24/09/2021 15:32

@CommanderBurnham, I fact checked for you

www.poynter.org/tfcn/2021/did-nasa-send-a-woman-to-space-with-100-tampons/

like @Nesbo said, NASA didn’t actually send a woman to space with 100 tampons, like the song says. However, according to Sally Ride, NASA did ask if that was the correct number. 😂

Nesbo · 24/09/2021 15:36

Perhaps the engineer was thinking what is the maximum possibly required under the most extreme circumstances, might there be some sort of increased failure rate of tampons in space that requires additional redundancy built in, what happens if there is a failure in the craft that leads to a significant delay in returning to Earth, what is the psychological impact of having additional stocks vs increased payload cost…

They may have had a huge spreadsheet of variables!

JaneJeffer · 24/09/2021 15:38

Isn't it just typical though to get your fecking period when you go off on a trip anywhere even to space. Curse.

Porridgealert · 24/09/2021 15:39

Sorry, is this an ad for Marcia, a joke post or are you seriously outraged? I can't tell.

WeCanBeHeronsJustForOneDay · 24/09/2021 15:39

Did you think that was the moment when she went “Hang on, I am coming back with you aren’t I?!?!”

Space scientists. If it's the right order of magnitude (plus or minus one) they count it as a triumph.

So much this. My 35 cycle became 55 this “month” (hello peri-menopause). What day did it arrive? The day before I was going to a charity skinny dip. I mean: it was actually predictable to anyone who has ever had a period!

Small wins though… I’d rather they ask if it’s enough than (a) forget about menstruation altogether or (b) make the decision for me.
You could say that’s a low bar, but I wouldn’t have been surprised by either of those 🤨

It’s what I had to do when I had periods. Good job I’m not an astronaut I guess. Must be a twat to get in and out of that space suit everytime you need to sort yourself out.

Or one an hour during waking hours... which some women have to do. And it's possible that zero G would fuck with your cycle. So it's not totally outrageous, and at least they remembered!
