I’ve turned to drink as the painkillers aren’t working but there must be something else I can do?

Acute pancreatitis caused by gallstone lodged in duct to pancreas which apparently causes pancreas to start to self-digest. It was excruciating. Hospitalised on morphine plus other painkillers. Nothing touched it for more than about 2 hours and I would sob for the next 2 hours in agony until my next dose of morphine. I can't tell you how awful it was. I was in hospital 9 days and it took 2 months and lots of ongoing discomfort to return to normal. I had my gallbladder removed which was a doddle in comparison. Have had 3 DC and none came anywhere near it for pain.

SequinsandStiIettos · 24/09/2021 00:30

Failed tooth extraction/dry socket
Two broken wrists, one undiagnosed scaphoid fracture, one undiagnosed break until showed up on third x Ray.
Chronic pain... I took the maximum dose of ibuprofen and paracetamol per day over the course of two weeks. With the wrists I soaked them in alternate hot and cold water.
Returned to hospital as I knew they needed re-x raying. One cast put on.
Rang dentist for any cancellations as the pain meds were not cutting it. Also took antibiotics and used bonjela, a cold compress and natural remedies.
When I had chicken pox as an adult just tried to sleep. Was so distressed asked bf to try and knock me unconscious. Would not suggest you do that.
What pain are you in?
Can you use hot water bottle or ice packs, alternate compresses, use a tens machine, give yourself an orgasm, listen to a hypnosis tape, try and sleep through it.
Ridiculous I know, as I struggled but unless you can get proper hardcore copain type mix from hospital, don't know what else to advise.

SequinsandStiIettos · 24/09/2021 00:33

And kudos to lulu a self-eating pancreas heroin cannot touch does indeed sound worse Wine

ThreeLittleDots · 24/09/2021 00:36

Muscle spasms in lower back from herniated disc. Couldn't do anything but scream and lie very still.

Following that, months of osteopathy.

Sorry to hear you're in pain

NotMyCat · 24/09/2021 00:36

Cauda equina. What helped? The operation!
But until then, vast amounts of morphine, codeine, paracetamol, naproxen, diazepam, heating pads on my back 24/7 and pacing as I couldn't sit still

Marmelace · 24/09/2021 00:42

It's not so much the strength as the consistency with me, neuropathy, it's always there, sometimes really bad, sometimes a nagging bodily ache. It's tiring, I have duloxitine, gabapentin and strong Co codomols

HerRoyalNotness · 24/09/2021 00:47

What kind of pain? Would a warm bath help? Ice/heat?

I fell off a table and landed on my shoulder, apparently a posterior dislocation iirc. Tore my labrum and dented my humerus. The first day was manageable, sent home with tramadol. What does that even do? Didn’t seem to do anything at all. The next day I was sitting on the couch in my sling minding my own business and the pain ramped up so much I was howling. Went back to a&e and screamed every time i moved, through triage, into the waiting area, lying down for CT. They did a towel thing to get me up so it didn’t hurt again. Everyone looking at my like I was looney. I stayed in the wheelchair so I the pain didn’t come again moving into a chair. They gave me Valium and morphine. They thought they were going to do something to it but decided they couldn’t because of the dent. It must have got caught on the socket. Begged them for better drugs, so got something with codeine in it. Next day the horrific pain was gone and just had the terribly bad pain. Was like that for a month, then surgery, terribly bad pain for another few weeks, then bad pain for a few months. Now down to only painful if I stretch or exercise it.

I’m torn between an awful ear infection and a tooth issue just before a root canal.

What’s going on with you op? Hope things settle down. Flowers

HelloDaisy · 24/09/2021 00:53

Kidney stone pain was horrendous. I didn’t have any problems with the stone until I had a scan for something else and the stone was discover. GP then said it was a disaster waiting to happened so recommended lithotripsy to shatter it.

I had the treatment but unfortunately the stone split in two and half became wedged in the tube. Never have I known pain like it, way beyond my coping!

Eventually it was removed through surgery but before that I was given ibuprofen suppositories as nurse in a&e told me they were the only thing to touch the pain. They certainly worked as numbed it enough that I could breathe normally!

Bamechage what is causing your pain?

DynastyBarry · 24/09/2021 00:54

Worst pain ever was a haemorrhaging aneurism causing an internal arterial bleed. Luckily it sealed itself as 99/100 times they bleed out... still in pain from what it caused years on, currently morphine tramadol amitriptyline... feel better soon Thanks

ILoveCheapCrisps · 24/09/2021 00:55

I had a tooth infection that ended up with me having septicaemia as it was over Easter bank holiday and no dentist would see me. I was absolutely wracked with pain, had taken everything over the counter that was available and remember feeling quite glad when I finally developed septicaemia as I was aware it was happening and knew it meant someone would help me.

Are you booked in to see a doctor? What kind of pain is it?

Exactly the same for me. Only I had 2 C-sections.
Twolostsoulsswimminginafishbow · 24/09/2021 01:03

Perforated intestine. Gas and air and morphine didn’t help. I was straight to theatre and in an induced coma on life support afterwards but the time I was awake it was off the scale. I’ve given birth three times with no pain relief, one presenting ‘back to back’ and that was nothing in comparison to the pain of this. What’s worse is that I’ve had this happen twice. The second time was worse because I knew what was coming. I was very fortunate to survive once (with peritonitis, sepsis, pneumonia and AKI) and am eternally grateful to still be around.

frenchfancy81 · 24/09/2021 01:06

The pain caused by an internal abscess in my pelvis caused by a strain of MRSA that everyone kept saying was muscular. Contracted Sepsis and could barely walk. Scan eventually found the mass and got me on the right antibiotics. Horrible!

Lweji · 24/09/2021 01:13

It really depends on what's causing the pain.

When I cracked my elbow it helped to stay immobile.
Period pain, only a high dose of ibuprofen to really help.
If muscle pain, a muscle relaxer can help.

tonamechange23 · 24/09/2021 01:22

Surgery that involved stitches around my clitoris - absolute agony, eventually diagnosed PTSD as was so horrendous . I remember GP coming around once I was discharged home and giving me morphine, which did help thankfully .

SpringCrocus · 24/09/2021 01:57

Sepsis. Gallstones. Pancreatitis.

Spidey66 · 24/09/2021 02:05

Until a week ago, gallstones. Had the fucker out a month ago
One week ago....came off my bike and broke my arm (top of humerus). Currently in AGONY.

MitheringMytryl · 24/09/2021 02:12

Marijuana. Don't need to smoke, you can use edibles or vape.

Obviously it means you aren't able to drive which is a bit of a fucker, but this is true of a lot of pain relief options. I used to only use it in the evenings when I knew I didn't have to go out again.

MrsTerryPratchett · 24/09/2021 02:13

Why not childbirth?

Apart from that, a very fancy tropical disease. I almost died. What helped, copious intravenous painkillers!

FizzyLizzie · 24/09/2021 02:31

Pulpitis. Utterly horrendous pain

Sciurus83 · 24/09/2021 02:54

Pyelonephritis, morphine. Fortunately not chronic which it sounds like you are suffering from?

Summer776 · 24/09/2021 02:59

Broke a.piece if tooth on holiday exposing the nerves, didn't know that was causing the pain at the time. The only way to stop the pain was to hold liquid in my mouth. When I swallowed the drink intense blinding pain began within 2 seconds. We were in the UK but several hours from home so called for emergencybdientaist who could see rhe next day I was then awake for 20 hours where the dentist packed the tooth and told me to go home early for it to be dealt with. We left the next day and my dentist had to remove several nerves that had died and explained how air on them, from the crack in my tooth, caused the pain. But by holding liquid the nerve tube filled up so blocking the air to the nerve ending. Truly awful relentless pain.

DaphneDeloresMoorhead · 24/09/2021 03:12

An ocular ulcer.

I'd go through childbirth again if forced to choose. The ulcer was much worse, I was a total state.

weegiemum · 24/09/2021 03:44

Renal colic. I made loads of wee stones and they just kept on coming. Worse than childbirth by a long shot.
