Abandoned car on our land

I live on a small private lane off a main road. Came home this morning and someone has abandoned a shitty old car on our lane, right outside our gate Angry there is a note on it saying they’ve broken down and left it. The note says it would be gone before dark but it’s still there. AIBU to be really pissed off and want to try to get it removed? It’s an eyesore and blocking access. DH thinks I’m being dramatic.

I had this happen to me , but the car owner told me what happened and asked permission to leave it. It was there roughly a week before he was able to get it sorted . I'd leave it until tomorrow and chances are it'll be gone by then .

Weepingwillows12 · 24/09/2021 18:51

Is it blocking your access or just an eyesore? Honestly they are probably having a terrible day so give them a chance to sort it. If it's blocking access and you need to leave then report it. Otherwise I think you are being a bit premature and should give them a few days to fix it.

@SkylarFerris ---> this way for a live parking thread where the thread you are thinking of is also mentioned www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4357757-I-have-a-parking-thread?pg=1 Grin

@Orangecrisp I would give them until monday to shift it , car tow truck are very expensive , unless it is blocking access to your drive / gate / house then tomorrow afternoon.

😂 haha I knew I’d seen it

SusieBob · 24/09/2021 19:10

If it's not actually causing you any bother I'd give it a good few days before having it towed.

Elieza · 24/09/2021 19:19

If it’s not blocking your gates, although it’s an eyesore, I’d feel sorry for the poor person whose car broke down and give them a chance to get it sorted out.

Just coz it’s old doesn’t mean it’s not someone pride and joy. Perhaps a wee old person whose had it for years.

I’d give them some time to get it picked up. However if its in an area that it’s likely to get broken into I’d be telling the police so they can phone the owner and tell them that.

I’d be cool with having it on my land for a couple of days. It could be that pick up trucks are cheaper to call out in week days than weekends. It may not move until Monday.

Summersun2020 · 24/09/2021 19:33

Ah come on now. They’ve broken down, give them a bloody break! No cheeky fuckery here, just someone having a shitty day from the sounds of it. I’d give them a chance to sort it, not everyone has the funds to have a car towed there and then.

WindyWinsor · 24/09/2021 19:37

Yes you're being dramatic. Someone has broken down and your main concern is it being an eyesore? Is it actually blocking anything? I'm gonna guess no.

If it's there after a few days then get frustrated, not now.

19lottie82 · 24/09/2021 19:42

Tricky one. The council won’t remove it if it’s not on public land. And a private towing company won’t remove it unless you can prove you own the car. I had a similar problem when I car was abandoned in my private parking space.

cheesegloriouscheeseyum · 24/09/2021 20:10

@Orangecrisp did they come and get it?

Curerofsouls · 24/09/2021 20:34

You cant unilaterally decide its abandoned especially if its taxed and MOTd. Have some heart OP unless its blocking your access nobody will give a hoot if its an eyesore. Somebody is probably madly trying to sort out recovery. Dont be so flippin mean. Kicking someone when they are down.

JudgeJ · 24/09/2021 21:36

@R0tational

First world problem.
Idiotic, pretentious response. You're not that special love!
ElvisPresleysSideburns · 25/09/2021 18:05

If you are sure it has been abandoned, you can't just tow it off or dispose of it.

You would have to issue a Tort order and follow the procedure under the Tort (interference with goods) act 1977.
