not to contact GP for this?

I came on with sudden fever and muscle aches yesterday, fever didn't respond to paracetamol but came down wih ibuprofen. Fever was still there this morning, but now much better after more paracetamol and ibuprofen

I've now developed a bad sore throat and my tonsils are covered in grayish pus

Should I be getting antibiotics, or does bacterial tonsilitis clear up on its own?! I have only had the viral type before

TIA

You should call a gp. I got antibiotics for bacterial, i don't think they clear up by themselves.

ThreeLittleDots · 23/09/2021 18:03

Ywnbu to not contact the GP. Pus isn't necessarily indicative of a bacterial infection anyway.

Difflam spray is good.

Don't contact the GP, especially while you're still waiting for your test results.

auditamanda · 23/09/2021 18:38

This is what your GP should follow, so have a read, might give you an idea

WaterAndRichTea · 23/09/2021 18:43

Ring the GP, Worth a phone call i think

EatYourVegetables · 23/09/2021 19:01

Ring the GP. I had recurrent strep throat that looked just like this. Kept going downhill feeling more and more awful for about 3 days. Got antibiotics, better after the first dose, much better after 24h.

crumblebug · 23/09/2021 19:49

Based on NICE guidance I should be prescribed antibiotics

Will see how I am in the morning and out in an econsult if things are worse

I would say it's worth calling the GP. I know it's quite rare, but a couple of years ago I had a bad bout of tonsillitis that I ignored and thought it would get better on its own, it developed into a quinsy (tonsil abcess) and I ended up in hospital on iv antibiotics, feeling extremely unwell..

Blanketsnpamphlets · 23/09/2021 20:40

Some pharmacists can prescribe antibiotics if there’s one local to you to attend? Otherwise definitely call - pus is more than “just” a flu and you’re potentially saving it from getting worse.

Rosesareyellow · 23/09/2021 20:44

I would would call the GP - they should be able to tell you over the phone if you need antibiotics or not.

VitalsStable · 23/09/2021 20:45

Gargle with hydrogen peroxide solution, you get it from the chemist and dilute it. It'll make the bacteria on your tonsils oxidise and fizz as they are killed off. It's pretty rank when you have to spit out the resulting fizzy stuff but clears it up really quickly. I used to have tonsillitis Ona months basis and became immune to the antibiotics and it was the only think I could use and worked quicker than the antibiotics and didn't mess with my tummy.

BippityBoppity87 · 23/09/2021 20:46

Yes, either the gp or nhs24. I had a bad bout of tonsillitis last year and rang nhs24, where I was able to speak to someone about my symptoms, prescribed antibiotics over the phone and picked up the same day at my local pharmacy
