To ask how contagious mumps are

Ds is in school (he is fully vaccinated) brother of one of his friends has mumps. Dd is only just 12 months and because of covid slowing everything down (I have been chasing for her 12 month vaccinations) she has not had her MMR. I am a bit worried, I still can’t get hold of the GP, they are closed for staff training today, it’s not urgent enough to contact 111. Just wondering what people’s experiences of mumps are, I am still breast feeding and I am vaccinated. Thanks

Is your baby going to be in contact with your son's friend's brother?

Chillyjellytotty · 23/09/2021 12:50

My son is in contact with the infected boys brother. My son does also sometimes play with the brother at school although this is in the playground.

A few years ago, I got mumps when working in a school. Apparently I didn't have the full vaccines as a baby. Didn't know until I had mumps and the doctors checked my records.

I share a house with dh and dc and none of them got infected from me despite being in close contact with me. They all have had their jabs though.

The answer is very. I missed my year 9 booster vaccine and contracted mumps when at college. It was far from pleasant. On the other hand my mum is not vaccinated due to allergies to vaccines and she did not contract it. Hard to really say but keep the kids separated where possible.

Even when you’ve been vaccinated as a child doesn’t automatically mean you still have sufficient anti bodies in your system and might need a booster shot. My gyn has highly recommended me to get a rubella booster vaccination at least 6 months before I try to conceive again if I want a second baby.

I’ve had mumps and I’m fully vaccinated!

My daughter caught it aged 21. Fully jabbed. A lot of her peers hadn’t been vaccinated with mmr.

Thanks everyone a mixed bag really, hopefully with covid precautions extra hand washing, room ventilation it will help prevent ds bringing it home.
I was vaccinated as a child, I then had to have all my vaccinations as an adult about 7 years ago due to my GPS dodgy record keeping 20+ years ago (i work in healthcare so needed evidence of vaccinations). So hopefully even if dd does catch it my milk can help protect her. Not so worried about ds as he is vaccinated which should protect him from the scary complications.
