Why is Sabina Nessa murder not all over the media?

Such a tragic killing and sad, truly awful to hear about this murder.

Though I can't understand why, it doesn't get the same media/public attention as Sarah Everard who died in similarly tragic circumstances not long ago.

Both are equally tragic, two young women attacked in similar circumstances - the only difference I can see in these cases is the colour of their skin. Sarah's murder was everywhere - before we knew it was a police officer responsible.

Women had lined the streets in protest to make the country a safer place for women.

I can't help but notice where are these women protesting for Sabina? Or for the Killmarsh murders, or other women of colour?

The media treats women of colour - even to this day - very differently to white women.

It feels like the media are sending a clear message that black lives STILL 'don't matter' quite as much as their white counterparts.

@Lightfish

It's known as 'Missing white woman syndrome'.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Missing_white_woman_syndrome

There was a thread about the disparity in coverage of the Sarah Everard case and the murder of sisters Nicole Smallman and Bibaa Henry.

Reference was made to 'missing white woman syndrome'.

The thread was deleted.

I was just reading about 'missing white woman syndrome' in relation to Gabby Petito, the young white woman who was found murdered in Wyoming.

As people have pointed out, Sarah was missing tor days and her friends organised a campaign to raise awareness on social media etc.

Sarah’s murder was shocking because it started off as an emerging missing person’s case that gave the public an insight into her life and made us relate to her. We saw all her photos with friends/family, heard that she just secured a new job etc. As each day went on with no update, her disappearance gained more traction.

Then it was the ridiculous fact that a serving police officer was arrested, and then her body was found.

Whereas with Sabina, she was found dead so there was no “story” that the public could get “invested” in. The police have been scant with details so Sabina’s murder just seems like the majority of murders that are reported on a daily basis, which go under the radar.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think Sabina would have ever have gotten as much attention had the same thing happened to Sarah. But Sarah’s story became a hot topic due to the circumstances of her death. It was essentially a real life crime frame unfolding in front of us

Crime drama not crime frame

why is the Sabina messa murder not all over the media?

The lack of media coverage for this poor woman is shocking, though not surprising. Sarah Everard was front page news for several days, and was talked about on TV, radio, social media, in the local pub, etc.

Sabina Nessa is Asian and therefore doesn’t have the same appeal. It’s the “missing white woman syndrome”. I didn’t know this was a thing until I saw it on this thread, but I mentioned it to DH the other day - Sabina hasn’t got as much attention because she’s not white. I even started a thread on Sabina Nessa two days ago just to get her name out there, and it’s not had much traction:

It just seems not as many people care and it’s hard not to assume why.

Because she's a black woman? It's absolutely disgusting.

Coverage was very limited, and is only now starting to increase.

Maybe show some understanding rather than trying to make a smart comment, which fails spectacularly.

Racism is a rancid disgusting poison, the old me would have thought it can't be? Can it.
Nothing surprises me with the racist undertones in the media every day.

It is absolutely heartbreaking and tragic that this beautiful young lady has been robbed of her life. 💔
Another scumbag entitled male.
Her poor family.

Your post is a disgrace and an insult to Sarah Everard. And so is the whole thread. I am hiding this repugnant thread now. I am sure it won't last long. The OP @postingfortraffichere knows it's a stinker, and that is why she has posted it at almost midnight when there is little moderation.

@MyPatronusIsACat A huge shame on you for suggesting that highlighting the lack of coverage on an Asian murder victim is somehow disrespecting Sarah Everard.

@MyPatronusIsACat you are a disgrace quite frankly.

You really think I am pathetic enough to plan the time of day to start a thread to avoid moderators?

You should take a look at why a post highlighting women of colour and their lack of media coverage when they die in random attacks invokes so much anger in you? Why is that?

You have issues.

People go to extreme lengths to deny the existence of racism. For them, racism is in your face, calling someone a racial slur, and anything else that doesn’t fall into that category is ok. That attitude is very evident by some posts in this thread.

Unfortunately given that people are looking down the barrel of extreme food/fuel property, COVID etc etc then it's not going to be a headline
You're joking right?
How is a young woman murdered her body dumped, the suspect on the loose not going to be a headline?

Could it also have something to do with the fact that someone was arrested almost immediately which implies that it might have been a DV or honour killing?

SE was missing for days and the killer wasn't known. A completely different set of circumstances.

@MyPatronusIsACat, it's not an insult to Sarah Everard. It's a comment on the state of our supposedly indiscriminate media and general society.

Missing white woman syndrome has been spoken about for a long time and it's still evident, people still plead ignorance to it despite it being reported on over and over again.

It also spans socio-economic position, age and sex.
