DS is 3 and started preschool 2 weeks ago.

He came out this afternoon a bit snuffly. Went to bed at 19:00 as normal. Eating and drinking normally.

Woke up at 21:45. Felt really hot so took temperature. He was 39.3.
Gave Calpol

It's been an hour. He's sleeping in bed next to me and I've just taken his temp and it's gone up to 39.6

Calpol has always bought temp down before. Im very worried. What shall I do?

I've ordered a pcr test for him btw

Spoke to clinician,

His temp dosn't seem to be moving, it's still 39.6 even after the nurofen. But he's happy as Larry being up at night so we can do the 111 assesment and you wouldn't think anything was wrong with him to look or talk to him. He's just so hot to the touch

Clinician said to monitor him. Calpol every 4 hours, Ibru every 6. Reiterated everything you guys have said. If temp gets worse or he deteriorates to call them back, otherwise keep him comfortable and happy. Lots of water and keep ontop of doses.

I'm still worried but not frantic anymore.
Thank you so much for your support. I was in a bit of a state and would have been hysterical had I not of posted and read your replies. Really appreciate your responses.

I'll update again in the morning.

Hi OP, just wanted to mention that even though you can give Calpol every 4 hours, you can only give 4 doses in 24 hours. So you're best giving Calpol first then 4 hours later Neurofen, then 4 hours later Calpol etc. That way there's 8 hours between each dose of paracetamol/ibuprofen but only 4 hours between each pain relief for your DC.

I was going to say aswell switch between calpol and nurofen, I always found nurofen the better one of the two. My ds used to get really high temps and have febrile seizures so if you're still worried it's not coming down get him seen too. Keep offering little sips of water often

Hi all,

He's much better this morning! Wouldn't know he'd had a terrible night to look at him!

Thank you, I will alternate every 4 hours. Thanks for that advice.

I think it's just a cold from starting preschool but DS now has to isolate until he gives a negative covid test. Me DH can leave the house cause we are double jabbed but DS is in isolation.

He's a lot brighter this morning and his temperature is under control now but he's all cuddely and poorly.

Thanks so much for the advice and posts last night!!
