Third week of new job and I’m unwell

I’m on the third week of my new job. I’ve only done five days altogether as I only work 2 days a week.

Tonight I’ve come down with a sore throat and I’ve got some chills coming on.
I work in a school so it would be really bad if I went in right?
I’m really anxious about calling in so early on and while on probation, but I guess I need to order a test too Sad

You can't go in and you definitely need to test. Getting ill is not your fault, and we're in a bloody pandemic with covid raging everywhere. Trust me, they will not be upset with you. Just relax and focus on getting better.

OwlInATowl · 22/09/2021 21:56

If you're worried I'd bat this to them and call and ask what they'd like you to do. So basically you're saying you want to come in but you have these symptoms and you wanted to run it by them first as a sensible thing to do

Lancrelady80 · 22/09/2021 21:58

If you're ill, you're ill. You can't help that and may well need time off to get better.
But if you work in a school you are probably going to get everything going for the first year, so you need to find where the line is between feeling a bit rough and being at death's door. Most school staff I know will go in come hell or high water and just power through, because not doing so leaves so many people in the lurch.

Different if it's Covid symptoms of course - but doesn't sound like it is? Are you doing regular lateral flow tests? Your school should be providing them.

MumofSpud · 22/09/2021 21:59

At my school there is something going round - a cold/sore throat / cough (not Covid!) and aches!
I got it on Friday afternoon 😡
Get a PCR (just in case) and don't worry about calling in!

A sore throat and chills are most definitely covid symptoms, especially for the delta strain.

Biscuitandacuppa · 22/09/2021 22:04

There are more bugs than just covid going around schools at the moment! All the usual winter bugs are doing the rounds too. I’ve been off since Monday with a poorly DD and she’s given it to me too, I also work in a school. They are quite happy that I haven’t been in spreading it.

FVFrog · 22/09/2021 22:09

Most common Delta symptoms (esp if double vaccinated) are sore throat, headache, runny nose, sneezing. So basically a head cold. I currently have it! A sore throat was my first symptom, downhill from then on! Please get a pcr test

Lancrelady80 · 22/09/2021 22:15

Okay, standing corrected. Was going off the main 3 symptoms they tell you to test for.

And if you do feel really, really bad then you do need to be off anyway.

Thatpennycrayon · 22/09/2021 22:40

If I do a PCR test and wait for the result, can I still drop my son at school? There’s no one else who can do it for me. If I stay outside and 2m apart from other parents?

OP posts:
Myotherusernameisshy · 22/09/2021 22:47

No, you have to stay at home until you have your results.

Thatpennycrayon · 22/09/2021 23:09

So I have to keep my son off school? There’s isn’t anyone else who can take him Sad he’s missed so much already this year and last. He’s in year 3.

OP posts:
Thatpennycrayon · 22/09/2021 23:13

My overriding concern is that I will get a mark by my name during the probation period because of this, if I do call in that is.
Sore throat getting worse now Sad

OP posts:
Thatpennycrayon · 22/09/2021 23:16

And my sinuses hurt.

DustyDoorframes · 22/09/2021 23:16

You'd get a worse mark for giving everyone COVID.
Book the PCR online now, at least that's proactive!

I would still take son to school if they are well. Why should they miss even more time off school?
ShaneTheThird · 22/09/2021 23:37

No you can't go to work until you have results back and unfortunately you will have to keep your son off if there's no one to take him. It's shit but so is covid. You would be in major trouble if you do have covid and went to work it would be an instant dismissal

DustyDoorframes · 23/09/2021 21:07

How are you today OP??? What did you do?
