To Think That Blowing Out Candles on a Cake is Unhygienic?

LizzieLoo28 · 21/09/2021 21:14

Its my daughters 21st birthday on Friday and we are getting a birthday cake for her, but since Covid came along and all the mask wearing to stop germs spreading, its made me think that blowing out the birthday cake candles isn't hygienic or at least eating a cake that someone blew their germs over isn't hygienic ?

What does anyone think ? Should I put candles on the cake or not ?

Cheers x

Use a hairdryer

Blowing out candles on a cake is unhygienic? Maybe look up what a '69' entails.
Crikey what sort of birthday parties do you have it your house!
MereDintofPandiculation · 21/09/2021 22:20

Yes, but does the wish come true if you fan them out or use a snuffer?

Must we suck the joy out of everything now?

Spongeboob · 21/09/2021 22:28

It's been a running joke in my family since my great grandma blew her candles out with no teeth in and covered the cake in phlegm and saliva. We covered the cake in clingfilm after that so people could actually have a slice.

annacondom · 21/09/2021 22:30

Yanbu. I've always thought it's unhygienic but have always done it. The clingfilm idea is a good solution.

You don't suck, you blow. Definitely doing it wrong...
XenoBitch · 21/09/2021 22:35

Ones where we smother ourselves in more interesting stuff than the exhalated air from the blowing out of candles Wink

ShaneTheThird · 21/09/2021 22:35

Oh no. I'm doing it right if you suck hard enough there's no cake left for anyone else

CiaoForNiao · 21/09/2021 22:36

Depends if we're talking about candles or 69s Grin

I quite like the idea of a party where I get to have sex with everyone. Provided the only guests are people I want to have sex with.

Meant to add this quote You don't suck, you blow. Definitely doing it wrong...

Haha, the only way to eat cake is like you are a shiny new Henry Hoover sucking up dust bunnies for the first time. They just vanish
TroublesomeTrucks · 21/09/2021 22:40

@SMaCM

It's never been hygienic. You can pop cling film over, then put the candles on for her to blow and then uncover the clean cake. Or make lots of cupcakes and she can blow the ones that family are eating.

Imagine having so few problems that you give shit like this actual headspace.

YourFinestPantaloons · 21/09/2021 22:45

@sundaydayisnotmyfundayday

Early on in the pandemic our DS (now 7) had clearly been worrying about the birthday cake situation. One night out of nowhere he said "Mum, on the birthdays can you cut the slice of cake for the birthday person and just put the candles in that for me to blow out?"

Why the hell haven't we been doing this the whole time!? ConfusedGrin

Sounds depressing TBH. I'd be pretty worried if my child overthought small issues like that.

Unhygienic. So what. A lot of things are, it's not bad to catch germs (not sure when the message on that changed)

Ttbhappy · 21/09/2021 22:47

Oh bit over the top let especially kids blow out candles on a cake because it's fun.

Rogue1001 · 21/09/2021 22:48

Anyone else reading and thinking covid really suits a particular kind of person?

and then thinking "not one I want to be"?

Yes!

It has certainly been a time to shine for busybodies, over-worriers and bossy boots hasn't it.

nzborn · 21/09/2021 22:51

Clap them out,just one big clap does it and it looks awesome

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 21/09/2021 22:55

DS 30 has cystic fibrosis and, amazingly, this hasn't even occurred to him. He happily eats other people's birthday cakes.

PercyPiginaWig · 21/09/2021 23:03

@TheShoeLady

Even before covid my DS came up with a hygienic method of blowing them out by flapping his hands. Otherwise a birthday card or something waved in the general direction does the job!
I just know someone in my family would set the card on fire if they were using it to fan the flames Blush

Yep - it sure has. Some people really like to make life hard for themselves Confused
