Feel so disappointed in myself

Mustangdally · 21/09/2021 20:13

Been on a healthy eating regime for about 6 weeks, also incorporated exercise and now doing 5 x workouts a week, I've lost a stone nearly.
Had my daughters best friends birthday celebrations today. They are both pre school age. They wanted Mcdonalds for lunch, ended up having a large big mac meal and mcflurry :( then this evening I've had pizza for dinner. I will get straight back on it tomorrow as I love exercising.. But just feel disappointed that I couldn't even manage a couple of months of being good and should've just tried to eat as best as I could've at Mcdonalds and not gone all out. Feel sluggish and horrible and wish I had some restraint.

If you beat yourself up over doing something perfectly normal then you are not going to sustain weight loss.
It’s a lifestyle, trust me from someone who’s yo yo all my life, I am amazing, lost a stone. Fuck it up on a binge and then think I’m a lazy fat cow.
But I am now eating healthily and letting myself have the odd blow out,

I bet if you add the calories up, it’s not as bad as it seems!

Don’t go extreme the other way, the first stone is easy (ish) it’s keeping going and having a normal life that includes cake and maccy d, that’s the only way to do it,

BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 21/09/2021 20:33

I know what you mean, because I end up feeling yucky when I eat crap.

But - we're talking about the rest of your entire life. You need to be able to enjoy yourself sometimes, and not think about calories etc, every single day. If you enjoy exercising you've already got a really big positive on your side. That's more important than what you eat on one day every few months.

DinkyDiggies · 21/09/2021 20:34

You are being unreasonable. Diets are about making long term changes, and consistently eating well over a long period. A odd day off is fine so long as over all your intake is enough to keep you at the you desire.
Life is always going to get in the way on occasion and so long as it is an occasion it’s ok. You’ve had 42 days of doing well, and one bad one, so don’t do yourself down by beating yourself up over it. By doing that you may lower your own self esteem... if you think ‘I’m greedy, I have no restraint’ it has potential to be a self fulfilling prophecy.
Look up growth mindset- so today I ate a load of rubbish and now don’t feel great, how can I improve next time?

Arepeoplereallycoolaboutthis · 21/09/2021 20:35

Your mindset is wrong OP. It's not your fault, that's what society has done.

Focus on eating well the majority of the time.

If you give yourself a mental list of what you are NOT allowed to eat then you'll likely go back to binge eating etc.

You've done so much for your body the past 6 weeks. Healthy food and exercise! That's amazing!

Write down all the good things you've eaten lately and include the McDonald's and pizza in that list. I bet it doesn't seem so bad now ay?

Oh you have nothing to be disappointed about! You just had a day off that's all! Relish it, and go back to being disciplined tomorrow.

Life would be deadly dull if you were disciplined every day. Smile

Lasttimeneveragain · 21/09/2021 20:39

No one got fat eating one maccies.

Mustangdally · 21/09/2021 20:39

Thanks everyone. I know I'm being unreasonable to beat myself up. I was just disappointed by how easily I gave in, in that I didn't even think oh I'll try a low calorie option at Mcdonalds 😂 or I'll eat something from somewhere else. Just went straight for it. I did close to 19000 steps today though so I still did a bit of exercise,

In all seriousness OP while it's great you are being healthier, you're attitude doesn't sound very healthy TBH.

Healthy lifestyles aren't about being 100% all of the time. It's about enjoying everything in moderation and making more healthy choices than unhealthy choices

Limejuiceandrum · 21/09/2021 20:42

WHO THE ACTUAL FUCK
Would ever go for a low cal option in MD
Only a sociopath

This, 100x over.

You didn't give in, op. You made a balanced decision

Divebar2021 · 21/09/2021 20:42

If you always see it as “giving in” you’re always going to lose. Ultimately there’s only so much you can do with willpower before your body throws in the towel.

I think you are right. Definitely. I have a bit of an all or nothing attitude to losing weight. I've gone from doing zero extreme exercise to working out 5 times a week at home.. I'm relatively fit anyway as I walk practically everywhere.. Just want to lose some weight and know diet alone won't do it.

IrishMamaMia · 21/09/2021 20:48

It sounds like you're doing really well. I've been struggling to lose weight in a similar time period and have recently realised that every so often I'm going to have some treats and carbs, but keep more mindful about it than before. As you said you'll be back on your regime tomorrow :)

FlorenceNightshade · 21/09/2021 20:48

Balance! That’s the key to any sustainable lifestyle. Eating exactly what you fancy once in a while isn’t a bad thing it’s normal. Seeing foods as good or bad isn’t really a positive approach imho, try thinking of healthy everyday options and rarer options. You don’t need to “earn” a treat it’s all part of a balanced healthy lifestyle

CarrotSticks23 · 21/09/2021 20:50

I don't really understand. You've done 6 weeks of healthy eating

Why then do you say you gave in after a couple of hours? Sounds like you had one day that was less than healthy in 6 weeks which is completely fine and probably good for you. I agree your attitude doesn't sound that healthy

slashlover · 21/09/2021 20:57

Think of it as two meals out of 6 weeks, or 2 out of 126 (if 3 meals per day).

toolazytothinkofausername · 21/09/2021 20:59

6 weeks = 42 days.

It has been proven it takes at least 60 days to change a habit.

YABU.

EmeraldRaine · 21/09/2021 21:25

"being good"?

Stop thinking of food as good and bad for a start. It's really not the end of the bloody world.

QuirkyUsername · 21/09/2021 21:25

I used to work with a few body builders and they always said it's good to have a bad day once in a while because it gives your metabolism a jump start. When I was doing slimming world I found that I'd lose more weight after having an off day once a month.

And anyway, there's always tomorrow to jump back into being healthy. You'd only fail if you gave the whole thing up after one bad day.

Moonlight1972 · 21/09/2021 21:27

Please don’t beat yourself ! I’d like to recommend this podcast podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/freedom-from-the-diet-cycle/id1560171576paulwistuba it was eyes opening for me

Mindyourbusiness22 · 21/09/2021 21:55

No food should ever be off limits! It’s one day. One day will not have an impact on your progress. Don’t give it another thought.

moita · 22/09/2021 07:51

Honestly its not bad food and good food. It's just food. It's a hard mindset to change but look up intuitive eating: changed my life!

I lost 50kg by now and I will tell you one thing.

This thinking is NOT healthy or good.
Why the fuck can't people understand that occasional pizza, or occasional chippy or maccies are not "bad". SadIt's not healthy go ignore giant proportion of food and mark them as bad.
Then there goes this self loathing. Why? Because someone eat not an everyday food once in a while?

This thinking is not how you want to go on. Honestly. That's what leads to constant self beatings, despair and "oh well i ruined it now so fuck it".

Think about food as everyday food and not an everyday food. Both groups are absolutely fine. Just one is something we should be eating more, the other less, not none at all.

I mean like look at this. You are posting on giant forum about being disappointed in yourself that you had maccies meal and a bit of pizza in nearly 2 months. How is that helathy...

grasstreeleaf · 22/09/2021 08:05

You've not given up. All you have done is stored some energy in your body for future use. So go on a long run or something else over the next few days and use it up if you don't want to keep it in storage.

I see my diet and exercise plan as taking the opportunity every time I possibly can. Then when it is more difficult and I don't, I don't need to get too stressed about it because I'll be back to it as soon as I can. Like when my DS was a baby and he wanted something and couldn't be distracted. As soon as you put him back on the floor he'd be crawling towards it!WinkGrin
