To think this will cause food poisoning

First off, I'm hugely emetophobic so am pretty anxious right now.

I made my daughter a packed lunch last Thursday night, for Friday lunch, but she decided she wanted to get a canteen lunch. I then forgot to throw it out (I know. I'm a slummy mummy at times. I have no other defence). Anyway, I made her another lunch last night and realised when I came home that it was still in the fridge. When she came home I proceeded to ask what she had eaten for lunch and she looked at me in confusion and said the lunch I'd made her. She'd obviously eaten the one from Thursday night ConfusedThe ham was in date until 27th (just checked the packet in the bin!) And the bread was probably best before Saturday, so may or may not have got a few mould spots. She said the ham was dry on the edges, which she still ate, but otherwise it tasted and smelt fine. It was only in a sandwich bag, not a tupperware container.

I'm now pretty anxious about the night ahead. Part of me thinks it will be fine and the other part is envisioning horrible vomiting brought on by food poisoning. So:
Yabu- she will more than likely be fine
Yanbu - she's defo going to suffer for that
I know in reality all I can do is wait and see. Its been about 8/8.5 hours since she ate it and she still feels fine, but I suppose there is still time as the nhs site tells me it can take days or even weeks to show symptoms (!)
Anybody else eaten similar and been fine/not been fine?!

She'll be fine OP. Don't panic.

Twillow · 20/09/2021 21:03

She'll more than likely be fine.

Keladrythesaviour · 20/09/2021 21:04

She'll be fine.

FusionChefGeoff · 20/09/2021 21:04

If it was in the fridge the whole time she'll be fine.

SickAndTiredAgain · 20/09/2021 21:06

So it was a sandwich made on Thursday and kept in the fridge? From a fellow emetophobe, it’s totally fine.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 20/09/2021 21:07

Eating a sandwich made on Thursday night at Monday lunchtime? I'd have no problem with that and your chances of food poisoning would be bugger all unless you were using seafood or meat that was already close to being too old.

Think about pre-packed sandwiches in shops - they usually have several days on them. Best before dates are a nonsense anyway, food is always OK beyond the BB date as long as it's been stored properly, and throwing things out at the BB date just contributes to food waste.

Aside from anything, if your daughter was going to be ill from a dried sandwich made of entirely in-date food, it would have happened by now.

Suzi888 · 20/09/2021 21:08

Where had it been stored? When I’ve been ill after eating something dodgy, it’s usually within about four hours. I’ve got a very sensitive stomach though!

pasturesgreen · 20/09/2021 21:10

She'll be totally fine. For one thing, ham that has gone bad looks and smells disgusting, and if she was supposed to be sick she'd more than likely have been already. The night will be fine.

Thatsplentyjack · 20/09/2021 21:13

If it was in the fridge all weekend she will be absolutely fine. In the school bag, I would probably be a bit more worried, but if she was going to be sick it would have probably happened by now.

pteradactyl · 20/09/2021 21:14

Thanks everyone. Feeling slightly less hysterical now so for that I am grateful!!!

Yes the sandwich was made Thursday night and put straight in the fridge, where it has stayed since. It would've been in her bag from 8am to lunch but it always is.

I thought she'd have been ill by now but not too sure

I honestly think she'll be fine.

MadeOfStarStuff · 20/09/2021 21:17

If it’s been kept in the fridge she’ll be fine. If it had been stewing in her school bag possibly not but it also would’ve probably looked and tasted pretty rank and put her off eating it

FlamesEmbersAshes · 20/09/2021 21:19

It’s been in the fridge! It will be fine.

Lovemusic33 · 20/09/2021 21:22

She will be fine. I’m an emetophobe too so get why your worried.

My dd2 got food poisoning from pork a few months ago after eating something that wasn’t cooked. She was very unwell but luckily it was the other end 😬.

I’m sure eating a sandwich that’s a couple days old won’t hurt.

lljkk · 20/09/2021 21:28

You don't want to know how long ago packed sarnies you buy in shops were made.

She will be fine.

Wandawide · 20/09/2021 21:33

Your post is timed at 9.00pm. I think she would have been ill by now.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 20/09/2021 21:36

The sandwich was in the fridge so if the ham was still in date it’ll be fine, I don’t see being in a refrigerated sandwich as much different from being in the refrigerated packet and the 27th is still a week away so it shouldn’t be anywhere near bad.

If the bread was mouldy it would have tasted bad, if she was able to eat it then it was probably fine and even if not a bit of mould isn’t going to cause a problem.

Honestly I think she will be fine.

coffeepleeease · 20/09/2021 21:38

Fellow emetophobe here and I think she'll be fine Smile

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 20/09/2021 21:41

Will be fine as it was in the fridge! All you’ve done is combine things together that you wouldn’t even worry about if they’d been in the fridge separately!

Antinerak · 20/09/2021 21:46

She would have been ill by now. It was completely safe. She would've noticed if the bread was too mouldy and as it was kept in the fridge and only a couple of days past the date I doubt it would be mouldy at all. The ham being dry would just be because it's been between bread, it's not any cause for concern.

Food poisoning that doesn't show symptoms for days or weeks is usually due to contamination, not just a bit of mould. I don't want to say the graphic details of what can cause that (in case you don't want to read it) but it's mainly meat that hasn't been stored correctly i.e. in a warm room or outside. Ham that's been kept in the fridge is definitely not going to cause symptoms that don't show for a while.

She'll be absolutely fine.

flowerlass · 20/09/2021 21:57

She will be perfectly fine. I have eaten bread more than 2 days out of date before.

Limejuiceandrum · 20/09/2021 22:02

I hope she doesn’t know you feel like this about an innocuous sandwich.

Justaflippertyjibbet · 20/09/2021 22:03

Just for your information, I have had properly diagnosed food poisoning twice in my life. The interesting thing is I was not sick even once during the whole experiences

pteradactyl · 20/09/2021 22:04

Given the overwhelming majority feeling on this I am feeling very relieved! Thanks all!

Shell be fine if it’s been in the fridge the whole time.
In the same scenario My DS ate a ham sandwich that had been in his bag overnight, after not eating in the previous day! So out of the fridge for 36 hours 🙈. He was ok too!
