To think gp are making this complex for me

I believe I have a urine infection. Have many of the symptoms. I work full time about an hour from the surgery. I can’t afford time to go and do a urine sample. Aibu to think they are wasting their time and mine.

Can you not drop in a sample on your way to work and just get in a bit late.

The GP needs to be sure anything prescribed is the right thing.

Antinerak · 20/09/2021 21:25

You're the one wasting time by wondering why the doctor wants to do some tests before handing out antibiotics. They're not making it complex they're making it straightforward

Ayeayeayeaye · 20/09/2021 21:28

There is no job in the world that can’t afford their employee seeking medical care. YABU you cannot self-diagnose and expect a doctor to give you medicine.

Going to the doctor is inconvenient for most working adults.

You are wasting your own time. You believe you have a Urine infection, you cannot say for sure. They could but testing your urine and give you the antibiotics appropriate.

Metallicalover · 20/09/2021 21:35

Standard procedure, your asking for help, they are giving you the help, take the advice. If your given a different antibiotic than what your urine culture is sensitive to and you become more unwell or end up with a kidney infection it would definitely not be wasting your time

I think you need to need to leave a sample . Labelled with dob name and date.
I had what I thought was infection and dr insisted I had to go to see her. I took sample which she tested and said was ok .I insisted it was sent off for further tests which she did v reluctantly. 2 days later they phoned telling me what was wrong and to pick prescription up.
So unless they have a sample they have no idea what you have .

Heronwatcher · 20/09/2021 21:37

As others have said, they can prescribe antibiotics over the phone but they still need a sample to check that you’re on the right antibiotic (they grow bacteria on the sample and can then tell what type of antibiotic will work). If you’re not on the correct antibiotic they will change them to a different type as soon as the sample has been analysed. Sorry but unless you are Lise Ducette you need to get over there and give a sample ASAP (as others have said you should be able just to hand it in at reception, but you should phone the receptionists first to check). Be aware that the longer you leave a UTI the more nasty it will be and the longer it will take to treat.

You can't even get antibiotics for tonsilitis these days. I was told over the phone if it hasn't got any better in next 3 days... call back... I understand how important it is with regards to antibiotic resistance so didnt argue.

Went in next day was sent to hospital with a Quinsy. Got some antib's sharpish then!

You only need to pop a sample in - nobody is asking you to piss on demand in front of them.

Dumbitdown · 20/09/2021 21:41

Haven’t read all the replies but can you pop to a Boots and get a Velieve kit? Not sure if they’re available in the UK but I’ve used them a couple of times and they’re very handy

Dumbitdown · 20/09/2021 21:43

velieve.io/uk

Wolfiefan · 20/09/2021 21:45

Antibiotic resistance. A huge problem. You can’t diagnose yourself and expect them to hand out ABs

Annoyedanddissapointed · 20/09/2021 21:48

Am i having a deja vu?

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 20/09/2021 22:26

Aibu to think they are wasting their time

Also, their times isnt wasted. You're not seeing them. You literally are not taking up anyones time because you're refusing to engage.

Chloemol · 20/09/2021 23:04

Ask if you can drop a sample off on your way to work. They need to test it

Otherwise you have a choice take time off and get it sorted, don’t take time off any hope it goes away on its own

Up to you

NotMyCat · 20/09/2021 23:09

I sort of get it
Mine is ring in the morning at 8am, queue to be asked the UTI questions, drop a sample down, wait for callback.. it's a nightmare because I work on the phone! You can't take a sample in without ringing first and it often takes an hour to get through. Half the time they don't find anything on the sample and then I suffer for a while longer before repeating the process with a GP callback who then gives me antibiotics
Last time I did a UTI assessment online and paid for antibiotics but I get them regularly and I'm at high sepsis risk without treatment so...
I must have had 75 or more antibiotics courses in my life Blush
