What is a reasonable time to put out your wheelie bins?

Our local council says not to put them out before 7pm but a lot of people here put them out much earlier. They remain on their properties so it's not an issue I don't think. Is there a cut off point where it becomes inconsiderate to wheel the clattering things from the back or side of your house to the front? We have 4 bins although it's rare for all 4 to go out at once. It's usually two. They make a lot of noise with their squeaking wheels, rattling lids and general clonking. Some people put them out anytime up until midnight, others at 6am on the morning of collection. What cut off would be reasonable in your neighbourhood or street?

Ours need to be out before 7am morning of collection. Majority of people, myself included put them out the night before. One neighbour has started taking them out about 2am which is bad enough but our bedroom is above where they are all stored so it's waking us up.

MyPatronusIsACat · 19/09/2021 23:26

IMO, anything between 4 or 5 in the afternoon and 8 at night (on the day before.) They are VERY noisy, so taking them out at 6.30-7am on the morning of collection is a bit inconsiderate, as is taking them out after 9pm the night before (as small children could be sleeping.)

DP sometimes takes our out before he comes in from work, so around 6:30pm. Or he gets up and drags it out in the morning.. again probably around 6:30/7am but our collection isn’t until 9am.

RosyPoesy · 19/09/2021 23:28

They need putting out the night before, any time before about 9pm. I’d be furious if neighbours woke me up putting the bins out at 6am!

lilacdinosaur · 19/09/2021 23:30

We usually take ours out just after dinner the night before so around 6.30/7pm.
We live in a cul de sac and there's one really inconsiderate person who puts his out around 5am every week and wakes the whole street because it echos.

LolaButt · 19/09/2021 23:31

On my old street everyone put them out early evening.

On my new street 50 percent of the residents put them out the morning before. Collection on the Friday and they put them out Thursday morning.

I find it really strange. Like there’s a competition as to who can get them out first!

Saracen · 19/09/2021 23:32

Ours have to be out by 6am. People put them out any time from about 4pm-midnight the previous evening.

I have been known to put mine out in the middle of the night when I've forgotten to do it at a reasonable hour. Luckily they don't squeak or rattle so I just need to tip and wheel it verrrry slowly to avoid noise from bottles inside clinking.

Last week I shot out of bed at 5:45am as I remembered I hadn't put them out. Didn't bother doing it quietly as the bin lorry invariably comes at 6 or even 5:50 so everyone was about to be awakened by the crashing collection anyhow. Then it happened that on that day they weren't collected until after 11am! Felt really guilty for waking people unnecessarily.

Anniissa · 19/09/2021 23:38

Ours are usually out by 7.30-8pm the night before collection but on occasions when we’ve come home late evening and no one else has done them, we’ll take them out at 11.30-midnight ish. Not ideal but sometimes can’t afford to leave the bins for another fortnight. We try to be as quiet as possible.

Miserablewithweight · 19/09/2021 23:45

I put ours out after dinner so about 7/7:30 but I hear others going out much later … tbh I don’t think they make that much noise or at least not enough to wake a child! (My 3 sleep through them anyway)

Our bin and recycling guys come before 7 so most people
Put them out night before

NotReallyAPrincess · 19/09/2021 23:46

Seems to be the morning or lunchtime before, like @LolaButt’s neighbours. I usually go for later evening, especially since having a baby in nappies because I don’t want to walk to the end of the driveway with a nappy bag.

I used to have neighbours I disliked and I also left for work at 6.30am. I took great pleasure in noisily dragging the bins past their ground floor bedroom on my way to work Grin

safariboot · 19/09/2021 23:47

I think legally it's more restrictive, but I say any time the day before. I've been known to put them out in the small hours but I try to be quiet when I do. Can't be any worse than the loud cars and motorbikes people drive around for fun.

Spikeyplants · 19/09/2021 23:48

It depends on the season. In summer, I feel its acceptable to be put out later, up to maybe 9-10pm. In the depth of winter, when its dark at 4pm, I'd say 6-7pm. I really don't understand why someone would wheel them out at the crack of dawn- especially when its noisy?

My elderly neighbours seem to empty their food caddy morning and night! They tap it loudly on the side of their outside bin. This is generally 6am and again at 9pm and far more infuriating than someone wheeling out a larger bin, because its next to my bedroom!

MusicTeacherSussex · 19/09/2021 23:52

Drunkenly at 4am with her guests in tow according to out neighbor. Good thing I'm up early at 6.30 to do mine louder!

honeybeesknees · 19/09/2021 23:53

We put ours out when we get the email reminder from the council, the day before collection between about 9am and 11am. If I don’t do it then, I completely forget.

Laladell · 19/09/2021 23:56

I left home at 16 and I'm now nearly 30 and have never ever noticed when my neighbours put their bins out I must be really absent minded 😂😩

Whattheschitt · 19/09/2021 23:58

My neighbour puts his out at 1am religiously. He's at home all day, but 1am is his time to shine. He also kicks the recycling boxes up the entry rather than carry them, just for that added pizzazz.

Nogardenersworld · 19/09/2021 23:59

Wow can’t believe people have opinions on this
I’ve never ever noticed anyone else taking out or bringing in their bins and I’ve certainly never cared
We try to take ours out during the day but we work shifts, so often it’ll be as early as 6am before a shift, or as late as 1am after a shift
It takes about 30 seconds and obviously I’m making as little noise as possible so I’m surprised to hear anyone is upset at that noise, I’ve heard cars with music blaring, kids crying, dogs barking etc that all last longer than that at those times

Mine are usually put out by the building manager at some point the evening before collection as I live in a flat and technically all bins are communal (but in actuality there are 4 flats and 4 general waste bins so we all use one each)

If I ever have to put the bin out myself then I do it at about 11pm. I always try to be quiet but it's not my fault that I work until 10pm and so my options are: put the bin out at 1pm before I leave for work, at 11pm when I get home from work or at 6am just before the bin wagon arrives.

I have no intention of getting up at 6am after 4hrs sleep (once I get home, have a shower, make something to eat and have some downtime it is usually 1/2am by the time I'm heading to bed) and 1pm the day before is too early so 11pm is the most practical time.

SpittinKitten · 20/09/2021 00:43

Thanks for the reminder - our monthly recycling has just got put out Blush

ilovesooty · 20/09/2021 00:48

Next door and I put our own and each other's out. Whoever is around usually does it early evening the day before collection.

avamiah · 20/09/2021 00:56

I think this is a great post as I have always wondered why people tend to put their bins out at midnight or 5am on a weekday when usually your asleep as you have a job or if you don’t have a job you have a child in school and have to get up at 6.30am or 6.45 am?

I’m in London and bins should be put out after 7 pm if possible but not 5am .

Snoozer11 · 20/09/2021 00:56

I have honestly never noticed the noise. I put mine out whenever I can be arsed. I have never considered that anyone would notice.

I try to be quiet but maybe the whole street hates me for making a racket?

Aprilx · 20/09/2021 01:08

Ours usually goes out in the morning, about 6-7am. I have no idea when the neighbours put their bins out and it had not occurred to me that anyone would notice when we put ours out. I thought being up at 6-7am on a weekday was not particularly unusual.

Vodkacarbsandtobacco · 20/09/2021 01:27

I usually put mine out last minute when I here the refuse truck coming up the road at 7am 😂 but it doesn't actually matter what time I do it because me and all my neighbours have busy lives, kids, jobs, social lives, hobbies and live in the real world.... not a single one of us gives a fuck what time anyones wheelie bin is put out. Live life on the edge and put it out whenever you want 😂
