Im already fretting about ds and how he will cope at university financially as after accomdation is paid he only has £540 left for next 3 months. He will probably get a job butvibwas wondering how much do you give your dc each week if anything

He couldn’t be bothered to get a job when he was off during the summer? No way I would be giving him £100 a week!

Tevion28 · 22/09/2021 16:28

Come on guys I need to give him a chance to find his feet first before refusing to subsidise him.

My son graduated last year is about to start his masters but when he was doing his uni course he got the full loan but he also had a job and he worked hard all over the summer to save money.
He continued working all through including christmas and every holiday to make sure he didn't have to worry about paying for things or needing things.
Your son has to apply for jobs as soon as he arrives as lots of other students will be doing the same.

TweetyPieBird · 22/09/2021 16:46

£130 a week is LOADS of money for a student. He will spend it on alcohol and takeaways and I don’t blame him. He will just ask for extra money for course materials. If you are so low income that he has maximum maintenance loan, then how can you afford to give him £100 a week??

Think the point I was trying to make OP regarding letting him lie around doing nothing all summer is that having a summer job, say at a pub chain which is transferrable, would have given him a foot in the door before he got to his university town. Am proud of my DD for having a job lined up as soon as she knew which town she was going to be living in. He's not done himself any favours by leaving it until now.

I recieved a message abt 5 mins ago that he has been offered a job in a bar 6pm until 11.30pm twice a week im so happy.

Apologies.

Oh hooray OP and well done your son. He definitely made a misstep by not working over the summer but is making up for it now. Good for him!
Kite22 · 22/09/2021 20:43

Everything Titchy said, both about why you have been getting a hard time, and also how to eek out the money you say you can't afford, and yet, despite everyone telling you that is twice as much as most students live on, still insist he needs to live on.

Come on guys I need to give him a chance to find his feet first before refusing to subsidise him..... you did already.... in June. Oh, and in July. Oh yes, again in August. Then the first half of September.

@chocolatesaltyballs22 - that will be plenty for your dc to live on Smile

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 22/09/2021 20:48

Thanks @Kite22 - I know you're right, but I think we have this insane need for them not to go without!

Yes thats exactly it I don't want him to go without. I didn't mean for my post to come across as it did. Anyway despite the fact I got a hard time I do agree with alot thats been said. Just wanted to say that ds has never been demanding on us financially if he has ever run out of money he never comes begging for more I say this as I don't want people thinking he is an entitled brat as he isn't. He told me he would get get moving at uni when he chilled out during the summer after working hard for his grades and he has.
