Without me giving a urine sample. Currently isolating with young child who may have Covid. Not yet double jabbed was due to have second one next week.

For a UTI? Yes they generally will but if it’s a repeat UTI then they’ll need a sample to check specific bacteria so they can choose the right antibiotics if the previous ones didn’t work

ThinWomansBrain · 19/09/2021 09:48

depends on your medical history and why you think you need them - fill out an e-consult form today if your surgery has them, call in the morning or call 111.

Bluntness100 · 19/09/2021 09:50

What’s it for?

Spudina · 19/09/2021 09:51

It’s not ideal. The urine test tells your GP what bacteria is in the urine and what antibiotics it is sensitive to (that will work) and resistant too (that won’t) So if there is a way for you to drop a sample in at the GPs that would be ideal. However, I have been given a prescription for Nitrofurantoin “just in case” before as I was always getting them and wanted a script only to be used if I got one on holiday.

Banani · 19/09/2021 10:21

Mine did for a UTI recently, I emailed with symptoms (first ever uti and pretty clear cut)and they replied to say they’d left a prescription at the pharmacy.

Blendabrethin · 19/09/2021 10:24

You can get antibiotivs for a uti from a pharmacy such as boots, lloyds or superdrug. You fill in am online form, it gets reviewed quivkly by an online dr and then they do the prescription. Costs about £15 though.

Youcanbesweet · 19/09/2021 10:29

I’m currently out of work for health reasons so can’t really afford to pay but thank you for the suggestion will keep that in mind for the future

Depends on age, symptoms, medical history. As someone who performs urinalysis I can tell you it's not that simple.
If it has to be sent for MSU at the lab then it's usually 72 hours for results.

Yes, this. Spent two months during lockdown taking the wrong antibiotic for ear infection. You need the correct treatment or may just as well take smarties.

Our pharmacy delivers medications (based at the surgery). If yours has a similar set up, might be worth asking if they’ll take a sample in for you?

Youcanbesweet · 19/09/2021 10:34

It’s the first time I’ve had symptoms I’m 36

OP posts:
Spidey66 · 19/09/2021 10:44

Could it be they're worried you've got a nasty uti and don't want to delay treatment by waiting on results? In that case not ideal but understandable.

Youcanbesweet · 19/09/2021 10:50

I would prefer the give me antibiotics without seeing them as would be difficult to get a sample to them as I’m isolating.

OP posts:
NerrSnerr · 19/09/2021 11:02

Are you waiting for PCR results for you child? If so they could be back soon. My area has a 24 hour turnaround at the moment for drive in/ walk in tests so if they're negative you could get the sample in then?

iamprobablynotyourcupoftea · 19/09/2021 11:05

Good luck. I had an argument with a rather arrogant one who refused antibiotics, for an ear infection. She is so up herself I need to find out her name so don't have her again. Sad

Youcanbesweet · 19/09/2021 11:12

Yes I could get the sample in but I’m just assuming he may be positive as does have a very bad cough but obviously it could be something else.

DamnUserName21 · 19/09/2021 11:33

A GP/ANP can assess you via telephone consult and issue antibiotics based on your symptoms. A urine sample is best practice but patients are not always able to provide one at the time abx are needed (such as in your situation).
If you need them urgently, I'd ring 111.

wafflesandbeans · 19/09/2021 14:04

Don't worry about the covid side of things in this instance. Unless you are awaiting. A PCR yourself it would be fine to do a sample.

lancaster · 19/09/2021 14:16

UTIs mostly treated on history anyway, would rarely need a sample.

LIZS · 19/09/2021 14:20

But who would collect abs for you , could they not drop off your sample?

MyDcAreMarvel · 19/09/2021 14:21

@wafflesandbeans adults who are not fully vaccinated and are contacts need to isolate.

IWannaRock · 19/09/2021 14:28

If you know the symptoms they might. I've been given two lots of antibiotics over the last 6 months for a chest infection then tonsillitis without seeing a doctor, just told them the symptoms on the phone. Hopefully my last dose for a while!

Youcanbesweet · 19/09/2021 15:49

A friend could collect the medication. I don’t really feel comfortable giving someone a urine sample to drop off

If you were in that much problems you wouldn't mind. Plus we don't care once it's in the surgery, we are used to all sorts of body parts, fluids etc and at least with urine samples we have warning! Grin

PinkDaffodil2 · 19/09/2021 16:16

If it’s a straightforward UTI and you’re not pregnant, having fever or kidney pain and you don’t get them a lot then they should be very happy to prescribe over the phone without a sample at your age for a woman. They shouldn’t really be needing to check urine if the symptoms fit, unless you don’t get better with treatment.
