Aibu I don't actually understand how to get my bath clean

We have a white tub. It never looks clean. It always looks greasy / smeary.

I use bleach and the scrubby side of a regular kitchen sponge, then I use a bathroom spray on top of that and all over the sides/tiles.

Please advise, what am I doing wrong?

Cif

Viakal

BrilloPaddy · 18/09/2021 20:51

It's probably limescale - something like Cilit Bang or Viakal should work but you need to "dry" the bath after........ we've got a couple of old towels that I use.

My Nan used to swear by filling the bath then adding biological washing powder. The enzymes do something magic and it really works. She used to leave overnight, then rinse well in the morning.

thetrolleywitch · 18/09/2021 20:51

Magic sponge? I normally clean with the Astonish bathroom cleaner but use the magic sponge for stubborn marks. Little and often is the key I think.

Speakuptomakeyourselfheard · 18/09/2021 20:52

The fact that you're calling it a tub rather than a bath makes me think you might be in the U.S, if that's the case, what's your bath made of, as it may be different to what we have here in the UK? However, if it seems greasy, perhaps it would be worth trying spraying it with vinegar, leaving it a few minutes and then rinsing off. Alternatively, cut a lemon in half and rub the bath with that before rinsing.

weird one, but I heard mayonnaise gets tough stains off baths

Never under estimate the power of washing up liquid!

Twillow · 18/09/2021 20:56

You don't need bleach for grease, you need detergent! Do you use bath oils or bubble bath? Maybe it's conditioner residue if you shower in the bath?

Bagstolen · 18/09/2021 20:57

That seems surprising it doesn’t stay clean for a bit with that OP, how annoying. (Why do you use bleach out of interest ? I use bathroom cleaner / a cream cleaner and it works well).
Does it look clean just after you’ve done it or are there bits that won’t come off? Which would suggest limescale indeed could be part of it. Do you use very oily products in the bath as this would need more regular cleaning and make it harder?

VestaTilley · 18/09/2021 20:57

Don’t use bleach, use cif (used to be known as jif) then scrub it all round with that - inc taps, then rinse off.

It works wonders on limescale, which is probably what is affecting your bath.

Don’t use bleach on a bath.

pizzaobsessed · 18/09/2021 20:57

I second washing up liquid. No need for specific bathroom cleaners which is probably what's causing the greasy film. Sponge and a bit of fairy liquid brings up bathrooms sparkling

Is it a modern bath or one of them ye olde ones made of, I dunno what it is, feels weird like bone.

We had an old bath, hard to clean. Got a new one, shiny and easy to clean. I have no clue as to the materials though.

LoveFall · 18/09/2021 21:08

A cream cleanser called Vim in Canada. I think it may be Cif in England. If there are stains the one with bleach in it works great. Also shines a stainless steel sink.

nyktipolos · 18/09/2021 21:25

Following this as we had a new bath installed and my last one was like this. Going to try cif. But its so frustrating.

BlackberryMuncher · 18/09/2021 21:28

Fairy liquid!

You might have taken the top coating off of the bath with harsh cleaners.

Limejuiceandrum · 18/09/2021 21:34

Get a cleaner

Minniem2020 · 18/09/2021 21:40

CIF cream (or any supermarket own equivalent) is great for baths, it gets any marks off but be sure to rinse it properly. It's also really good for cleaning Upvc doors and windows

Hot water and washing up liquid

nonevernotever · 18/09/2021 21:47

My plumber recommended washing up liquid. And if it was really dirty to wipe the washing up liquid round and leave it to soak in for half an hour before scrubbing. But I second pp . If you've been using bleach on it it's possible you've damaged the coating depending on what it's made from.

Poppins2016 · 18/09/2021 21:49

Agree with this. Start with detergent - washing up liquid or laundry powder are great! You need to remove any greasy film before attempting limescale remover or bleach (I find grease blocks other products from working as effectively as they should). You may also find that solely using detergent is enough in any case...

Ecozone magic stain eraser

CSIblonde · 18/09/2021 21:54

If it's yellowing limescale, fill bath enough to cover it. Add half a bottle of white vinegar and leave for 3 hours. Then pull ug out & rinse. Result is shiny white sparkly bath.
