To ask when did The Young stop going to DISCOS

Lovely DD (16) is sat here beside us watching Netflix. When I was her age (in the 70s/80s) I would have either been at a disco or in the pub. Obviously, now young people have to produce id to get served, the latter is out but I think it's a bit sad the young don't go to discos.

Did you go? What do your teens do on a Saturday night?

It was house parties for me.

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 18/09/2021 21:35

House parties was my era. From 14-18 every time someone’s parents went away for the weekend we’d all be straight round there the minute the car pulled out the drive laden with lurid coloured alcopops certain to stain at least one piece of soft furnishing. Good times Grin.

becarefuloutthere · 18/09/2021 21:37

@ANunInPopSocks

I basically spent 15-18 in pubs and clubs with my tongue down the throats of various young men Grin

'Bops' at uni in the 90s

SamBeckettsLastLeap · 18/09/2021 21:41

Sad really, U18 discos in the local club were regular in 1997, we all wore gowns and feather bowers

ShinyMe · 18/09/2021 21:41

I haven't been to a disco since I was about 15, in 1987. After that it was clubs, til I was in my 20s, and then staying at home. I agree with others who have said that discos are what schools and brownies and youth centres put on, and were always a bit sad. Nightclubs were actually cool.

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 18/09/2021 21:41

Surely it's obvious that when the OP says 'disco', she means nightclub? Or "are you going out jiving?" as my gran used to say to me as I got ready for a night out at the local nightclub.

Nofacedetected · 18/09/2021 21:42

I'm starting to think I'm going senile and imagining the discos Grin

@Thadhiya

I was 16 in 2000 and "a disco" didn't exist. Nightclubs existed, for 18 year olds. Bars exist. A "disco" was something your school put on and played YMCA and Timewarp. There were very few places a 16 year old could really go - youth clubs had all closed.

One thing we did have in a nearby town was an age 13-16 night at a nightclub, so from about 6pm to 8pm, no alcohol served, and it was quite good really - kids got to feel grown up, dance, drink orange juice, meet friends and so on. I went a few times with my friends but I don't know how widespread the idea was, or if it still goes on.

I remember this! Went a few times, was a good introduction to it. Fun. And then all of a sudden we/everyone quickly moved onto proper town centre clubbing and house parties at around 15/16!

The vast majority of clubs were demolished (for the usual reasons) in the mid noughties onwards. No longer are there these social local rituals for teens. It's a bit sad. Obviously the alcohol wasn't great but things were better in other ways.

Cam2020 · 18/09/2021 21:43

I didn't go to bars or clubs until I was 17! I had young parents, who I was close to. The downside of that is they knew the reality of what went on in clubs (drink, drugs, older men preying on teenage girls) so I wasn't allowed to go before then. Saturday nights were spent at home with them or at friends' houses or house parties. It actually wasn't drink or drugs that bothered then so much as the attention from grown men.

MrsRobbieHart · 18/09/2021 21:46

Oh I’ve just remembered a local pirate radio station used to put on teen dance nights. (This was in the 00s) I always wanted to go but it was further away than any parents would be willing to take us and we couldn’t afford to get there and back under our own steam.

Asortofreddishamber · 18/09/2021 21:47

@NotExactlyHappyToHelp good times indeed

gibletjane · 18/09/2021 21:49

I lived for the weekend just so I could dance.

This! & I still miss it.

I think it's sad

nancy75 · 18/09/2021 21:49

I was 15 in 1990 & started going to the local ‘nightclub’ at around that time. The place is still there (after many rebranding) & is now strictly over 25 and ids anyone who looks under 40.
In the early 90s I would imagine the only people legally old enough to be there were the bar staff & even some of those were questionable!
On one hand I’m happy my 16 year old dd isn’t out getting pissed on snakebite & black but part of me does feel like she’s missing out on part of growing up I look back on fondly. There is really nothing for 16 year olds to do in the evening.

gibletjane · 18/09/2021 21:52

What do 15-18 yr olds do in the evenings these days?

DavidRosesJumpers · 18/09/2021 21:55

@MrsRobbieHart we did formals/pre-formals in Northern Ireland. Pre formals were often out of town venues. Sometimes I think we had buses booked. So so drunken. ID/licensing must have been very slack.

Generally out in bars/nightclubs every weekend from 16.

Sorry OP, I only remember discos from primary school!

nancy75 · 18/09/2021 21:56

Not a lot, most of dds friends are just at home, on their phones
TartanJumper · 18/09/2021 22:02

Not a disco (nobody called it that!) but in the early 00s, we went to nightclubs!
I think 2 years or so of lockdown and nightlife being shut down means younger people have missed out on some of these rites.

beigebrownblue · 18/09/2021 22:03

The problem is, no one can do anything without being filmed and plastered all over social media.

I believe there will come a time soon when social media and mobile phones are banned from 'discos' and night clubs and anytwhere in general.

It is wrong that people are filmed anywhere we go.

Really wrong, horrible and offensive.

GrandTheftWalrus · 18/09/2021 22:04

In Scotland you don't go to clubs or discos you go to the dancing! I started going out at 16, lied to many a bouncer about my age saying I was born in 83 and not 84 lol.

I really hope my dds don't do what I done but I'd be a hypocrite if I moaned about it

Jonnywishbone · 18/09/2021 22:05

Lash in the park at 15, pubs and clubs after. Miss those days, life was simple then.

VioletCharlotte · 18/09/2021 22:07

My DS are 22 and 20. Neither can be bothered with clubbing anymore. They used to go pre COVID, but now prefer going to the pub or chilling indoors, having drinks with friends. It was different back in the 90s as you could get into clubs at 16, plus it was much cheaper to go out then. I remember when it used to be free entry and £1 a pint before 11!

nancy75 · 18/09/2021 22:11

Yeah, the place I used to go was £2.50 on Friday night & you got a free ticket for your next visit. Somehow as well as being very underage I also always had a bag full of free tickets!

Zilla1 · 18/09/2021 22:12

The music (in the voice of Marlon Brando saying 'The Horror') .....

gibletjane · 18/09/2021 22:13

Not a lot, most of dds friends are just at home, on their phones

Don't they get bored or want to let off steam? I remember clubbing on a £10, I barely drank except tap water & never took drugs but dancing all night was amazing.
