To wonder why they don’t make toy kitchens like they used to?

The Little Tikes Country Kitchen was THE play kitchen of the 1990s. I loved mine. I ha. It away to a Neighbour when I out grew it.

My SIL still has hers and the children all love playing with it. You wouldn’t know it’s over 20 years old.
Mine have a wooden kitchen but it really doesn’t compare.

I haven’t found anything that even comes close to the height, size and durability of the Little Tikes one.

Even the newer little tikes one are not half as good. Why don’t they make them like the country kitchen anymore?

Has anyone found one that matches up?

I keep searching eBay and marketplace but nothing near enough!

YABU: toy kitchens are better these days (please post Recommendations.

YANBU: Nothing matches up to the Little Tikes kitchens of the 1990s.

I had the a la carte one as a kid and loved it but I also love the IKEA one we got for our dcs. 6 years and 3 dcs and it is still going strong and played with most days.

You've just reminded me that we still have the Country Kitchen up in the playhouse. I wonder if my 20-something dds want to get rid of it? What part of the country do you live op?

Bimblybomeyelash · 18/09/2021 22:53

Ah the bluebird kitchen! I can picture it now. Not in my house of course, we were jumble sale barbie types, but my cousin had One and it was fab.

Melissa and Doug do some nice wooden ones. My daughter loves hers!

WillaWeatherspoon · 18/09/2021 23:02

We have the ikea duktig and it's in great condition and played with daily. I made a few modifications like using steel-look fablon on the oven and microwave and putting metal handles on to match our actual kitchen, and giving it a walnut effect worktop. I love it.

Oh come on. Every one ever made is probably still around somewhere. Surely moving towards more natural materials is the way to go.

The "Easy Bake Oven" was my childhood fantasy. You could even bake real cakes in it (aka cupcakes)! Mum always refused to buy us one, saying that we could learn to use the real oven if we wanted to. We got my sister one as a joke for her 40th birthday (many years ago).

Another vote for the IKEA one. Bargain and very durable.

DancingintheSpoonlight · 18/09/2021 23:33

You've made me all nostalgic! Bloody loved mine and was gutted to grow out of it.

It's absolutely not in the same class but DD's asda kitchen is very good.

I had a thing that was like half market stall half kitchen. It was great. I think I also had a kitchen that was a cafe with little trays. Not sure why they were all commercial kitchens! 😂

bluetoothroboticgrapefruit · 20/09/2021 09:01

Now I'm thinking about it I also had a sweet shop and some sort of eastenders branded market stall too. Confused

pompomsgalore · 20/09/2021 09:04

It's all about the mud kitchen these days.

Thesearmsofmine · 20/09/2021 09:09

The IKEA one is very good, we have had ours for ages and it’s still in great condition.

CottonSock · 20/09/2021 09:11

The asda one had good reviews but wasn't durable. Wish I'd braved ikea

SusannaM · 20/09/2021 09:17

We loved the IKEA wooden kitchen, it came with an extra microwave bit and the rings lit up. Sold it years later, it was still in good condition, despite having been played with loads. Far nicer than the plastic play kitchens. We also had a Habitat wooden toy BBQ, complete with wooden kebabs.

My son is 11 now but I got him one from amazon from a spanish seller for about £60 that was red, it was wooden, had a clock with movable hands, sink, cupboard, oven, hobs, hooks to hang things on, shelf and a microwave.

it was really good still got it, its a bit broken tho, dont know what to do with it, I could technically take it apart and rejig it as a cupboard its just wood and screws after all, anyway I am digressing just keep looking, it randomly popped up on amazon after much searching.

alternatively you could get the inferior ikea ones or make your own, there are tutorials online for how to both modify the ikea kitchens into something more interesting or build ones from other ikea furniture on sites like Instructables.

VelvetChairGirl · 20/09/2021 09:44

Found the one here, I got, the builders managed to break the oven door and stuff but I still have it was just using it as a cupboard.

RonObvious · 20/09/2021 09:44

I was going to say that the Ikea kitchen is extremely good, but it appears that I have been beaten to the punch several times already!

KitchenFishCurry · 20/09/2021 09:46

I'm very old my Dad made me an cooker from a cardboard box, rings drawn on the top and a door cut in to the front for the oven. It was the 70s so I suppose we were rich because we could afford a box

bluetoothroboticgrapefruit · 20/09/2021 11:48

The bosch one really is comprehensive! It looks like something from masterchef.

Thesearmsofmine · 20/09/2021 12:05

The thing with the ones like that Bosch one is they are quickly outgrown, they tend to be fine for toddlers and preschoolers but older dc like to play with toy kitchens too and you can’t raise the height.
