My little girls been sick and I've got a phobia of being sick I'm so worried, any advise ? It's her first tummy bug and I am really really worrying and stressing over it, she was sick once and hasn't been sick since 10am but I am terrified about catching it

I’m a therapist in the NHS, this is the most common phobia we work with by a country mile!

It responds really well to CBT. You can self refer into your local IAPT service without a GP referral.

She hasn't been sick or diarrhoea since last night. I'm still panicking but she's on the mend I think xxx

Just coming on to say similar. A friend of mine with a really extreme level of phobia is now fine, after a combination of CBT and learning self-hypnosis techniques to stop the panic as it starts.

Good luck 😄

Mostly recovered sick phobic person here Grin

72 hours clear I would start to relax, you need to be fastidious with your hand washing and make sure you are cleaning with a bleach solution. You need to look after yourself so eat and drink even if you keep it plain, not eating won't stop you catching it.

Unmumsnetty hugs to you, it's an awful phobia to live with.

bluepurplepinkyellow · 22/09/2021 17:17

Where does the 48 hour rule come from ?

OP posts:
bluepurplepinkyellow · 22/09/2021 17:17

And how did you get over your phobia ? @UncomfortableSilence I'm absolutely desperate 😢

Just wanted to say I am emetophobic too and I feel really bad for you - it must have been really scary when your dd was sick. It’s an awful, awful phobia to have and I wish there was a quick fix to get rid of it as it is so very debilitating! I totally feel your pain.

I would say you’re ok now but keep up the hand washing, it may have been one of those bugs that kids catch and adults don’t (rotavirus?). As PP suggested, eat something - even if it’s small and often plain stuff. Not eating won’t help you!

User1110 · 22/09/2021 17:51

Sorry just saw your partner was sick. You poor poor thing, how stressful.

Feel free to PM me if you need anything, even just a chat to take your mind off it all. Xx

UncomfortableSilence · 22/09/2021 18:42

48 hrs is when you are most contagious, it can live on surfaces and in stool for up to 2 weeks which is why bleach cleaning is so important.

I'm in a FB support group and I've seen enough times that it's not 48 hrs and you're good unfortunately.

CBT has helped a lot, exposure, my kids getting older, working in a school a mixture, I'm definitely not cured and my stomach still turns if one of my DDs says they feel ill but I've managed to stop all my avoidance/safety behaviours, I don't think about it all the time and if it happens I can just about cope!

bluepurplepinkyellow · 23/09/2021 11:28

Thankyou all, for your lovely support it has been hell for me and having this thread helped so much Xx

Tuesday even every one was clear if puking and shitting, I've not eaten all week at all like nothing ! I had one piece of toast today and I've got the shits !! Could that be the bug or just where I've not eaten then eaten? I'm so hungry and don't particularly feel unwell

You need to get this phobia sorted. I live with a family member who is the same and the impact that it has on the immediate and wider family is huge. The impact upon the children and the individuals lifestyle is massive. Please address this now whilst your child is young.

Fireplace12 · 24/09/2021 14:07

Oh, and stress will cause an upset tummy.

bluepurplepinkyellow · 24/09/2021 14:10

@Fireplace12 so this isn't likely to be the bug ?

Hi op. I’m glad things are looking better for you. I’m sure your upset stomach is a a reaction to you eating something for the first time in a while mixed with some anxiety.

I’ve got an appointment with Dr David Veale in October - he specialises in treating this phobia. There seems to be no one else in the county who does this. I’m going privately to his clinic, which is expensive, but it’s worth it in my opinion to try!

He’s just released a book which might help you:
www.amazon.co.uk/Free-Yourself-Emetophobia-Self-Help-Vomiting/dp/178775331X/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?dchild=1&crid=PALLT3PNVZJE&keywords=emetophobia&sprefix=emetop&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1632489082&sr=8-2

I’ve also ordered and looking forward to reading it.

There is also so much support online - I follow a page on Instagram called ‘emetophobia’ which really helps me. And also a Reddit sub - which can be a little triggering. I would say just know there are others (so many others!) can make you feel better. Xx

bluepurplepinkyellow · 24/09/2021 16:53

What an idiot I drank concentrated pure juice on an empty stomach so no wonder I had the shits !!
