Should I inform holiday compsny

So, we booked a holiday with a travel company.

When we arrived at our cottage we immediately removed the following and placed them in a cupboard.

Rug
Blanket
Cushions

We have a puppy and such items are sometimes taken and we didn't want it to be a problem. I noticed when putting the rug away it was stained on the underside, I didn't photograph or report this and it would not have been noticed unless we had picked it up.

Unfortunately on the last evening, our dog damaged the sofa. First thing the next day I informed the holiday company and they in turn sent me a claim form as we'd taken out insurance.

The form required some information from the owner, the holiday company advised to email direct.

When I emailed, he then advised that the rug and cushions were also damaged and he had to buy new ones.

He attached a receipt, it looked very old for something that should only be a week old, the date would be on the bottom and this conveniently was not showing.

I replied that his accusations were totally incorrect and the reasons why.

I honestly think he was trying to pull a fast one, thinking we would just pay it as it's an insurance claim.

I feel I should inform the company we hired the cottage through. They can ask for the full receipt, which I do not believe will show the correct date!

AIBU to inform them?

No I would definitely inform them

mrsbyers · 18/09/2021 13:51

Absolutely inform them - what a cheek !

PinkiOcelot · 18/09/2021 13:54

Definitely inform them.

SharpieDog · 18/09/2021 14:33

I'm going to attach a copy of the receipt! This receipt is allegedly one week old!

Looks older than one week to me and as I've said the date (presumably at the bottom) is cut off.

I'd be asking for a copy of the full receipt, including the date

I've told him I'm not paying, so I doubt he will let me have it. But I will ask.

It looks older than a week though?

He’s being a CF. You put those items away so how could you ruin them. I’d contact the company you hired the cottage from if I was you.

Brollywasntneededafterall · 18/09/2021 14:56

Have a look online. See if the shop are currently stocking those items.

Bumpinthenight · 18/09/2021 14:56

If you look on the Dunelm site, those prices are current prices so he may not be pulling the wool over your eyes.

I would tell them that the rug and cushions were put away and hold your hands up (as you have done) to the sofa.

The let is newish, I've no doubt the items are current. Whatever we didn't damage the items he had purchased.

Ask to see the whole receipt then.

Outbutnotoutout · 18/09/2021 15:00

I would ask him to send the receipt with the date showing

I'm not paying it, so I'm sure he won't send it why would he?

I've told him that we didn't use them at all.

Irrelevant of whether the receipt is older (and I agree it definitely looks it!) he’s 100% a CF trying to pull a fast one!

We once stayed in a holiday house for a weekend, the kettle didn’t work, we probably should’ve reported it straight away but we just got on and boiled water on hob instead and I told the owner as we handed the keys in as we left - they tried to charge us for it and sent a receipt for over £100 from about a month before so I told them they should take it back to the shop as faulty… never heard anything more about it

Yes our error was not sending a photo of the underside of the rug.

The items may only be a week old. But you didn't damage them, they were in the cupboard. They could have been damaged the first week they were there, before you arrived, so the date is irrelevant.

If it's his word against yours though and your insured is it worth fighting or do you juat get the insurance company to pay?

Headteacher415 · 18/09/2021 15:09

To be fair, the most likely scenario is that the owner did a thorough check of the property to see if there was any other damage caused by the puppy, and found the damage to the rug. He may well not have lifted it to notice before, as you did, and found the damage, which you should have reported. Have you asked why the cushions? It seems that you are both being reasonable from your own perspective.

He said they were wet? They weren't!

I won't claim for something I haven't damaged! I don't understand the bit about the items being a week old?

It's the receipt that would only be a week old.

Your issue is that you didn't report the damaged rug when you noticed it - so now your puppy has damaged the sofa, it really does look like the puppy peed on the rug, you cleaned it (and it didn't work) so you shoved it in a cupboard and hoped the owners didn't notice as you didn't want to claim for multiple items.

I think the receipt shows who is being disingenuous! That receipt not showing the date and looking three months old, tells a story.

If he fights back, I'll ask for full view of the receipt.

It's no skin off my nose to claim for it all, but I won't have false accusations made.

I'll update as it goes along.

They haven't been issuing paper receipts since May.

StormyTeacups · 18/09/2021 16:18

No, they can and do give paper receipts as well. I got one yesterday
