DS had an accident at nursery today. This was the state of him when I picked him up today. He fell off a rope swing.

He's in bed now. But I'm sitting here googling his injuries and worrying myself and wondering if I should have taken him to be checked over. I'm getting myself in a right state now I've googled. Worrying about internal bleeding and whatever. His lip is very swollen but I was more worried about his nose bleeding. His nose and mouth took the brunt of the fall.

Should I have taken him? Should I still take him?

Swells like crazy but HEALS like crazy, should say

crayray · 16/09/2021 23:19

@RoseGoldEagle

Can you ring 111 for advice? I rang about my 2 year old a few weeks ago who had been bitten by an insect and had reacted hugely to it. The duty doctor called me back and got me to send a picture, so you may be able to do the same? Hope he’s ok OP
Off topic but what do you mean by reacted hugely? As in an allergic reaction? Just asking because my DS had what appeared to be an insect bite recently but it turned into a big boil/abscess and freaked me out a bit.

@LadyOfTheFlowers

I took DS to A&E when he slipped on one of those wooden stumps sunk into the ground as stepping stones and smashed his front teeth/lip/nose/face in the next one.

When I got to playgroup to pick him up he was eating a sandwich Hmm

On arrival and examination at A&E I was informed he had managed to detach his top lip from his face, push his 2 front teeth back up and out the top of his gum (the roots were exposed further up above the teeth) and get grass lodged up there somewhere.

They told me all would be ok, his beak, I mean lips, would be fine - the mouth just swells like
crazy but also helps like crazy - and to take him home and give him ice lollies.

Long story short he was fine.

But yes, I got him checked out.

Hope he's looking better soon as I bet he's feeling remarkably ok WinkGrin

That made me laugh and shudder in equal measure 😳🥰
Fluffypastelslippers · 16/09/2021 23:23

Nursery did phone me at 3:30 when it happened and I went straight over there but they didn't advise me to get him checked out medically.

It's not really up to them to advise though. I don't think they have done anything wrong here.

I definitely would have taken mine to be checked out, although I probably would have just nipped into the doctor surgery where the practice nurse would assess and get the GP/clean up/give script/send to hospital if needed.

TableFlowerss · 16/09/2021 23:24

If it was my first probably A&E but with second then probably not.

He’s got a nasty fat lip but I’m sure he’ll absolutely fine. He’s not fallen from a height. It doesn’t look pleasant but I’d he’s if ok in himself and it’s not likely to leave scaring and he’s not in pain then I’d jet him rest. See how he is tomorrow

TiddyTidTwo · 16/09/2021 23:26

He will probably be absolutely fine! It's looks worse than it is.

As a mother: take him to A&E and double check. Thanks

TableFlowerss · 16/09/2021 23:26

I’m no doctor though

Holskey · 16/09/2021 23:26

I'd have taken him, but I would have assumed as I was doing so that it probably wasn't necessary. Better safe than sorry when it comes to my dc

sproutsandparsnips · 16/09/2021 23:26

As long as teeth ok, and no vomiting no I wouldn't.
If there is a problem with nose you need to wait for swelling to go down before they can address it.
Looks nasty, but hopefully once swelling down all well.

Oh no, I don't think they did anything wrong. In fact, they were bloody brilliant and always are.

The point I was making is, no one, not Nursery (though I do understand it isn't really their place to advise either way), not DH, not other family members, suggested taking him to be checked out and DH even actively disagreed that we should get him checked. So, I was worried I was perhaps overreacting.

Sorry, my misunderstanding

Obimumkinobi · 16/09/2021 23:29

My 2 year old faceplanted on our wooden floor and her tooth (which was ok) had pierced her lip and she was swollen up like your son. I was convinced she would need stitches, as the wound looked gaping to me. Dr said it would be fine and just to put some ice on it. It was fine in a couple days.

steff13 · 16/09/2021 23:30

I would have iced it and just kept an eye on it.

Rainallnight · 16/09/2021 23:30

It’s hard to say. I don’t think I’d have taken him but I’m on my second DC now and my threshold is possibly a bit too relaxed!

Flowers for you. It’s just awful when they have an accident at nursery

kravestix · 16/09/2021 23:30

And just to say, DS has had no pain killers or anything. And unless the area is physically touched, e.g., wiping his nose and touching his lip, then he doesnt appear to be in pain. He's sleeping fine and not waking with pain or anything either.

HailAdrian · 16/09/2021 23:30

Poor little thing :(

VaguelyInteresting · 16/09/2021 23:31

I’m a worrier and I don’t think I’d have taken him, if he was eating, breathing, drinking and talking normally and without showing signs of pain.

The sleeping was probably exhaustion from the shock of his fall/crying after. My DS gets sleepy after a big crying session if he’s “badly” hurt.

But I’m very much not a medic, and firmly believe if you have niggling doubts with a little one - you should listen to them and take him in.

kravestix · 16/09/2021 23:32

I know! 😭 It looks awful. He looks like he's been utterly battered and beaten. He doesn't even look like my DS. I keep looking at pictures of him from before.

mateysmum · 16/09/2021 23:33

I wouldn't wake the poor little chap up now. Speak to 111 and see what they say.But I would certainly get it checked out hopefully in the morning.
I would only worry if the swelling increased and started to affect his breathing.

Thank you! Totally get that. DS is my PFB! But not DHs first which is why he's probably less concerned than me!

Danikm151 · 16/09/2021 23:34

I’d take him the walk in centre in the morning or see if you can get in with the GP

Gizmo79 · 16/09/2021 23:37

No, it’s just swelling. Will go down in 24-48 hours.
Unless he has gone through his lip or teeth have come out. Otherwise nothing will happen(yes HP here sorry…)
Give him some good pain relief and wait for swelling to go down. If chin has been bitten through or lip line cut through then shouldn’t scar and I can’t see that on photo.
However….!if you are concerned them ED will be happy to have a look and double check. That’s what we are there for!

avamiah · 16/09/2021 23:41

Kravestix,
How is he now ?
Did they put a ice pack on his lip as it looks pretty swollen to me ?
Have you given him Calpol for pain?

Your picture showed his injuries when you collected him, how does he look now and has he been able to drink water or eat anything ?

kravestix · 16/09/2021 23:43

They applied a cold compress at the time, yes. He's drinking fine. Ate half his dinner which is normal for him and even managed a small bit of chocolate. So all good there. No calpol as apart from when physically touching the area, he wasn't in pain. He's sleeping now, just checked on him and he looks the same as the picture.

Gizmo79 · 16/09/2021 23:47

The only thing I would be worrying about is his drowsiness which could be an indication of a head injury- but as long as no vomiting then the advice would be just to keep a close eye which you are doing!
If anything changes then go straight to paeds ED for a check out.
