To get a smart car

brumbrum2 · 16/09/2021 19:31

I've just been awarded DLA high rate mobility for my disabled child. We already have a car which fits his wheelchair, WIBU to get a frivolous car with his DLA. He would be using it and it would be available to his carers but the main car is the family car which is used to transport him.
When i say frivolous all im thinking of is something like a mini convertible as I know my child would love having the roof down and feeling the wind through their hair.
I know I don't have to let anyone know I have been awarded this for my child but should I be more practical?
In defence I'm exhausted my child never sleeps and has complex needs.

We used to have a Smart. See if you can borrow one for a test drive to see how it works for you.

So long as you don't need to transport more than 2 people we found kitts hugely practical. Nippy, easy to park anywhere, and a more practical boot than you'd expect.

It's amazing what you can get in a smart car!!

Totally love mine

Nutrigrainygoodness · 16/09/2021 19:36

My MIL and FIL had a smart roadster but it was tiny. You couldn't fit a wheelchair in the boot, and it's very very low down (I don't know if that would be an issue for you)

Nutrigrainygoodness · 16/09/2021 19:37

*if its a big wheelchair, not a small compact one

I'd say go for it! Provided your child can actually get in and out of it. Friend had the smart sports car for years, absolutely adored it, but had to sell it when her disability made it too difficult to climb in and out. Even without a disability I found it difficult.

GoWalkabout · 16/09/2021 19:44

Do you mean the brand Smart as per your title or do you mean a posh/fancy/smart car such as a mini convertible?

Shade17 · 16/09/2021 19:47

Get whatever you fancy! As long as it’s available on motability and it’s suitable for your DC then it’s all good! Might be some up front cost with a MINI vert though.

EarthSun · 16/09/2021 20:00

The new Smart Cars are nice - but only available in electric now I think. But I'm also not sure if you mean a Smart Car or a car that is smart looking!

ISpyCobraKai · 16/09/2021 20:03

Go for it.
I have a motability car for me and it's a Mini Cooper, and I bloody love it!

I'm thinking this it's too indulgent isn't it ?

Get what you want. I’ve got a fancy bmw. I had to pay 1500 towards but it’s an amazing, lovely car. Nobody would want my life. I don’t worry about it.

ISpyCobraKai · 16/09/2021 22:17

I paid extra towards mine too.
It was worth every penny, I love my car.

mrsbyers · 16/09/2021 22:48

Why not just save the money or use it to fund other stuff he needs ? It doesn’t have to be spent on a motability vehicle

LeSquigh · 16/09/2021 22:52

If you mean an actual Smart brand car, I wouldn’t. They crumple to shit in accidents, I’m surprised they are allowed on the road.

They don’t. I’d rather crash a smart than a Fiat Panda for example. Obviously they’re not as safe as a Volvo but they still manage a 4 star Euro NCAP rating.

Sussexbonfireviking · 17/09/2021 08:17

SMART cars have a Tridion safety cell - a structure that surrounds the vehicles' occupants andacts as a strong protective cage, preventing any distortions and keeping those inside intact in the event of an accident.

Smart Cars Earn Highest Safety Rating

As for safety, the ForTwo did well enough in crash tests by the independent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) to earn the group's highest rating—five stars—thanks to the car's steel race-car style frame and liberal use of high-tech front and side airbags.16 Sept 2019
