To be aggrieved by this (traffic)

My morning commute is proving a nightmare - slow moving traffic all the way.

But why is is some cars just don’t bother to move for ages, leaving an enormous space you could fit a couple of trucks in? This then holds everything up further as people trying to get in and out of side roads can’t. It took me ten minutes to get into my work car park yesterday when I was yards away because of this.

Does anyone else notice it?

Urgh I hate this too. Also, on a smaller scale, I feel irritated when people don't move up at the drive thru in a timely fashion Grin.

I'm not sure why people do it! I'd love to hear why.

takealettermsjones · 16/09/2021 17:54

Because if the car in front of you breaks down, you need room to get out? Not two trucks' worth, obviously!

malmi · 16/09/2021 18:19

I don't see how it prevents people getting in and out of side roads. Unless the gap lines up with the side road, in which case it would make it easier.

DrFoxtrot · 16/09/2021 18:27

If you're in the queue and you can see the turn to your work ahead, you might be able to get there a lot sooner if people move up enough. Rather than loads of big gaps. Also, more people might be able to get through traffic lights at the back of the queue, for example. If everyone moves up.

Watched a programme a few years ago, something like Britain from the Air? Anyway, it explained that that is EXACTLY how you end up with gridlock.

So YANBU!

StoneofDestiny · 16/09/2021 18:35

Perhaps because the automatic cut out of the engine in stationary cars means people are trying to reduce the amount of re ignition?

I don't do it, but might explain.

My parking sensors go off if bumper to bumper

There's a major roundabout on the outskirts of our nearest city that gets completely blocked most mornings for this exact reason.

The traffic lights go green for stuff already on the roundabout, there's room for three or four cars on the exit road, so two cars follow the first through the green light, only for car number one or two to stop a full fucking car's length or more behind the one in front and leave the third car blocking the sliproad onto the roundabout from the dual carriageway. Total bloody gridlock; nobody can go anywhere until the original exit road has cleared enough for that car to move forward (by which point the sliproad traffic light is usually back to red).

It annoys me too but I think it's the people with stop start engines, easier to leave big gap and restart engine less times would be my best guess
BlankTimes · 17/09/2021 00:45

Being too close to the car in front means mine sucks in all their exhaust fumes Envy

billyt · 17/09/2021 11:45

There is no need to leave big gaps at all.

Stop/start? Engine is back on as soon as you touch the clutch so don't see how that is relevant?.

Fear of being stuck if the car in front breaks down? If you pull up behind a car and can see the bottom of his rear wheels above the edge of your bonnet you will have enough room to go around.

Half the time it's because the twats are farting about on their phones....

Space for manoeuvre if an emergency vehicle comes through?
