AIBU to find this an insult?

Light hearted. Currently the only female working within a team of men. They call me one of the boys.
YANBU - who wants to be a boy?! It's an insult
YABU - it means they accept you and unfortunately will not rein in their childish banter

You’re being deliberately “woke”

Hmm

It’s nice to be part of team

CallMeRisley · 16/09/2021 06:07

Say “morning ladies” when you arrive Grin

BlackberrySky · 16/09/2021 06:07

They are being inclusive. No need to overthink it

Brefugee · 16/09/2021 06:08

When my lot say that I say "team. One of the team"

And I point out they're men not boys

Looubylou · 16/09/2021 06:13

Is it an excuse to carry on with unacceptable sexist language and behavior? If so YANBU.

AICM · 16/09/2021 06:14

@Brefugee

The first part of that is fine.

Can just point out to you that they can call themselves boys if they want to.

StoneofDestiny · 16/09/2021 06:42

Just trying to be inclusive - but it sure no guy would want to be ‘one of the girls’

girlmom21 · 16/09/2021 06:49

The words 'insult' and 'lighthearted' are pretty contradictory...

Brefugee · 16/09/2021 07:04

Can just point out to you that they can call themselves boys if they want to.

Sure they can. But they're still not boys.

^^This.

Their humour isn't sexist just childish

MaryHadALittleRam · 16/09/2021 08:05

I'd just see it as being one of the team, I wouldn't see it as an insult at all.

discombobulatedonion · 16/09/2021 08:09

As someone who has never fit in with any girls at all, I’d take it as a compliment and I’d actually be delighted about it if they said I was “one of the boys”.

Porcupineintherough · 16/09/2021 08:13

Well you can push team instead of boys but I doubt that will stop them being childish if that's the dynamic.

thepeopleversuswork · 16/09/2021 08:13

As others have said if this gives them air cover for sexist “banter” then YANBU. Otherwise you are overthinking and it’s probably meant as a cack-handed compliment.

Feduphairymclary · 16/09/2021 08:15

I've always been "one of the lads" in my part time job, working with a bunch of male security guards. I like it personally, I am an outrageous flirt (although it is always just for fun) and it is a safe space to have a laugh with my colleagues. They obviously know I'm a woman (and wouldn't let anything happen to me) but it also means they don't stand on ceremony and if they are doing something outside of work, I get an invite. As part of the team instead of a token woman.

dworky · 16/09/2021 08:19

It's definitely insulting to women. They're intimating that they don't usually accept women but you're one of the 'good' ones because you're just like them.

HarrietsChariot · 16/09/2021 08:58

It's not insulting to women. They're intimating that they accept everyone as equal and don't see any difference based on gender.

scarpa · 16/09/2021 09:31

Our (80% women) team at work refers to one another as 'the lads', so I don't think I'd be bothered about this!

LowbrowVictoriana · 16/09/2021 09:34

Wouldn’t bother me at all. They’re just saying they see you as no different to any other member of the team.
