Anyone else's Grandma....

me4real · 16/09/2021 03:50

I happened to see this mentioned somewhere presumably as a joke, but my nan insisted on being called Grandma, as she said nan was a goat etc etc.

I hadn't heard the above reason until my uncle mentioned it a while back. Also presumably she thought it common.

I always thought it was sooo formal - quasi-Victorian, although she will've been born in about 1915 or something. She died in the early 90s. I don't recall ever challenging the status quo.

She wasn't well off financially or anything.

Anyone else?

I had a Grandma and a Gran

DrCoconut · 17/09/2021 22:43

@Pemba my grandma and now my mum insist(ed) on grandma because a nanny is someone well off people employ to look after their children.

kennycat · 17/09/2021 22:44

My mum absolutely did not want to be known as nan or nanny. People automatically use it though and I can feel her trying so hard not to wince when people refer to her as nan. Much like I when people shorten my name in a certain way!!

TiddleTaddleTat · 17/09/2021 22:45

Mine said the same

BeckyWithTheGoodHair010101 · 17/09/2021 22:46

My mum won't be Nanny because that's a goat. So she's grandma. Which sounds posh to me. I had a Nana!

Dibbydoos · 17/09/2021 22:47

My mum is grandma to her grandkids. Tbh I prefer it to nan or nanny too. Oh and I'm Grandma Di to my step grand daughter - not my choosing it was my SD who decided on it. Her other grandmother is Grandma June! To be honest though, whatever a child wants to call their grandparents is good imo!

hayley013 · 17/09/2021 22:57

Yep, my grandma said exactly that too!

babybythesea · 17/09/2021 23:06

I had a Nana and a grandma. My own mum is Nana to my children.
They all said a nanny was a goat!

They both sound lovely and warm to me, and not in the least bit formal, but that’s because the ladies associated with them were all lovely, loving, warm, cuddly people. So to my mind as a child, the only distinction between the two names was one belonged to my dads mum and one to my mum’s mum. It was how I distinguished them when talking about them.

If I have any other associations, it’s that the name Grandma comes with a tin of Foxes Glacier Mints, while Nana has echoes of toblerone!!

Jayne35 · 17/09/2021 23:16

I wanted to be nanny but now I’m nanny first name, I wish I chosen grandma (I kind of get it, as DILs mum is nanny)

DilysPhyllis · 17/09/2021 23:39

I had a Grandma and Nana. Grandma was warm and cuddly, nana was not, nothing to so with their names. I was a bit disappointed when DM and DMIL both wanted to be Nanas, I'd have loved the DC to have a 'Grandma' too, its.definitely the name I'll choose if I get the chance as it has lovely memories attached to it of a lovely lady.

SockQueen · 17/09/2021 23:45

I only had one set of grandparents, who were Grandma and Grandpa. I don't know who decided it, but got the feeling that Nan/Nanny were considered a bit "common" by some of that generation.

My DSs have Grandma & Grandpa and Granny & Granddad. Neither of our mums wanted to be Nan either.

Leontine · 17/09/2021 23:53

All of my grandmothers were variations of Nan. Grandma seemed so formal to me. Perhaps it’s a northern thing but variations of Nan were much more common round my way.

Scrumbleton · 18/09/2021 00:12

In my family it’s grandma or granny - I find nanny a bit mmmm. I knew one family who called their grandfather nandad which is triple mmmm

Mamanyt · 18/09/2021 01:45

LOL, don't ask me. I called one of mine "Bethy Lee" (her name was Elizabeth), and the other "Bubba," probably baby-talk for "Mother," which is what MY mother called her, always.

MajorNeville · 18/09/2021 02:18

I had a Gran and a Nanna growing up, both mine and DH's mums are Grandma. I want to be Granny when/if my time comes round. I like that it sounds like a little older lady, lol

Hakunapotato · 18/09/2021 02:31

I heard a young girl call for her Grandma today in a shop. I actually smiled and said to my husband it was lovely hearing it as that’s what I called mine and I don’t hear it much anymore. Funny timing with this thread!

Sweetpea1532 · 18/09/2021 03:51

My DM is called "Grammie by all the grandchildren..My grandson calls her "Ammie because he hasn't quite got the gr sound yet...I just love hearing him call out for her. I'm called a special nickname. When I hear the word "granny", the t.v. show, Beverly Hillbillies come to mind as the matriarch was called "granny"Smile

Mollymoostoo · 18/09/2021 09:05

@MummyInTheNecropolis

My nana was Irish and always insisted on being called nana, which is what my DC now calls my mum. We used to call her grandmother to wind her up sometimes as she hated it!
Same here. My SD called hers nana1 and nana2 but my kids had one Nana and one grandma so they didn't get confused.
YouTubeAddict · 18/09/2021 09:08

Both my deceased grandma’s were called grandma. Sorry to all the Nan’s/nanny’s/gran’s on here but I think they’re a bit common. I could just about accept Granny. I plan on being Grandma.

yellowglass · 18/09/2021 09:14

I'm nanny , I had a nanny but my DC's have a nana ( said nan ar ) as she is from Staffordshire way . I've always thought it was lovely

SunSeaSurfGin · 18/09/2021 10:01

My DGMs were called Nanna & Gran

Both were English

Not sure why really. I was the youngest of grans dgc and they already called her gran. And on the otherside I was the first so maybe they thought I need to be referred to as something different so not to get confused. Especially as both grandmothers were close and met up on their own accord.

Barney60 · 18/09/2021 11:17

Ive recently become a grandparent. Im Nannie, i asked for this rather than grandma, to me it sounds more friendly.

Bigoldhag · 18/09/2021 11:41

I have a grandma! I never thought it old fashioned - mainly because my grandma is young for her age and very ‘cool’ and I didn’t know anyone else with a Grandma!

Fluffmum · 18/09/2021 12:30

My Grandma was posh fallen on hard times in the 20s. My mother is also a Grandma. I love it

Plumtree391 · 18/09/2021 12:35

Well it isn't. There is nothing unfriendly about 'grandma', 'granny' or 'gran'. 'Nanny' or 'Nannie' is someone hired to look after children.

However, each to their own.
