My head is mush. I know the theory but cannot make my head figure this out and have a teenager melting down and migraine brewing 😓

Too blurry to see which are angles p, q and r - can you describe or add to the diagram and post again?

spikelou · 15/09/2021 18:15

p + q would be the same as 2r, as they share a third angle at X and XYZ is isosceles.
So r = (p+q)/2

Tittyfilarious81 · 15/09/2021 18:21

R = p+ q

Photo sorry I'm a bit rushed!

Too fuzzy to read! Can you repost picture? Obvs something to do with angles on a straight line adding to 180 and equal angles at base of isosceles triangle / angles of a triangle adding up to 180.

MyrealnameisBernard · 15/09/2021 18:26

Why is p plus a the same as 2r? I'm struggling so much and said teen won't talk to me now. Re attaching with my handwritten note
Thank you so much!

Your photo is blurred and the wrong way up, if you can repost it I am sure someone will answer it in no time.

spikelou · 15/09/2021 18:29

The big triangle is isosceles so the angles at Y and Z are both r

Cocomarine · 15/09/2021 18:30

Others have answered but to put it in words in case that helps him…

Think of an angle marked at X, the triangle point.
We know that all interior angles of a triangle add up to 180.
Therefore, x = 180 - r - r
We know it’s r and r again, same value - because all isosceles triangles have the same size angles at the base.

The other triangle:
x = 180 - p - q

So you’ve got:
x = 180 - p - q
x = 180 - r - r

You can ignore the x and the 180 as they’re the same in both sums.

So r + r must equal p + q
But you only want one r…
So take your p + q and divide by 2.

r = (p + q)/2

I think it’s only blurred on some people’s screens - some people had found it clear enough to answer 👍🏻

The internal angles of a triangle all add up to the same thing (180 degrees). Because the triangle is an isosceles, you know the bottom 2 angles are the same, so r+r+x=180.

p+q+x also equals 180.

Both equations contain x so you can remove this from both leaving p+q = r+r

On another note I should say this is year 10 and the teen is showing no interest in anything school related. He Cannot do this work already and we are only a week in and I'm really worried about the future. He's not even looking at this now. It's me as he's gone off in a strop
I feel a new thread in teenagers coming on. It's too early to give up and think he'll fail everything already, surely? This is DH worry. I think he's capable but unmotivated

I’d say by Y10 - the school, you and he should have a good idea of appropriate maths set.

Have you got any reason to think his group is too high level?

Is this new for Y10 rather than a recap? I’m more familiar with Y7-9 syllabus (from homeschool!) and I would say that a high set end of KS3 has the knowledge to do this, but could easily - especially second week of term - need a, “and what do we know about isosceles triangles?”’prompt.
On a good day, that prompt would get mine started, and a bad day she’d scream, “that’s no help, as I clearly don’t get it, you’re making it worse, you’re so patronising!” 🤣

If you think he’s in the right set, let school pick it up. You may find this is a deliberate stretch and it’s OK that they don’t all get it.

Maybe email the teacher and ask if he would expect YOUR child to get it.

I know this is not an option for everyone, but a tutor even for a short time can really help with concentration - mine would NEVER kick off at a “patronising” tutor as she would at mum 🤔

Cocomarine · 15/09/2021 18:47

Bear in mind though, a % of MN users won’t have opened this, because Maths.
And some that did from curiosity went, “the fuck?”
He’s only just gone back, he may have had an interrupted Y9, depending on how good his school was / how well he adapted.
I wouldn’t panic just yet!
As I said above - how do you feel about the group he’s gone into vs his KS3 progress?

MyrealnameisBernard · 15/09/2021 18:49

@Cocomarine we had a tutor but he's gone AWOL! Maybe he finds it as awful as I do. I'm not being "but I'm clever" here but I did get an A in maths and really hoped I could help him but this (plus headache which is growing so bed beckons) had mr stumped. I'll ask the teacher and you're right. It's maybe a stretch leading to further setting. He did really badly end of year 9 but I put that down to Covid. The difficulty level seemed to really ramp up his school. I think they take a "throw it all at them now and we'll recap for two years " approach but blimey it's hard when teen won't engage and gets frustrated.
I might try finding another tutor as he always spoke nicely to him!

Do we fancy another? I'm so tired now and fuzzy with meds and guessing this is something to do with 180 degrees in a line. Was hoping DFA was a right angle but it's not got the little symbol.
The red bits and yellow bits are angles I think are the same. Teen gone off to bed with "sore shoulders "

I've got as far as 2x plus something =180

DCE = 2x as it is on a straight line (180) with ACB

Of course it is. Could I see it? Nope. God I feel stupid tonight. Thank you @spikelou

No problem! Smile Don't be hard on yourself, you're putting all this effort into helping your son do his homework, which is wayyyy more than a lot of kids get. You're awesome.

I needed this during lockdown! I didn't think to ask on here! Everyone's so helpful Flowers
