To think I don't need a car?

Just that really. Live in London, great transport links. One child at home aged 12, grown up child without car and a grandson aged 2. I do LOTS of ferrying around (not 12 year old). Recently divorced and think the car is a bit of a luxury really and an expense I could do without. Am I being unreasonable to think we'd all cope perfectly fine without it?

I developed epilepsy and lost my licence, also in London.

I find it mostly easy but it's awful in the rain!

jackstini · 14/09/2021 22:49

Not me, but my cousin lived in London for 5 years and never had a car, although he could easily have afforded to
Parking and public transport made it pretty pointless
He hired one 3-4 times a year to come a couple of hours north and visit his family

We are car-free in London w 3 kids and a dog. Really recommend it! Huge savings every year. And much much nicer journeys. Just think how much time you will save w no ferrying!

Never passed my test Grin!

I walk, cycle or use PT. So easy.

In other parts of the country PT is a lot more expensive and not as frequent as London. To visit my mum in the country I have to take a 30 minute bus journey (one every 2 hours) to her village and it costs £5. In London, I can use buses for up to an hour in any direction and it costs me £1.55, and one will turn up within 10-15 minutes. . No wonder everyone in mum's village has a car.

No, I absolutely hated not having a car for 2 years and I'm in London. It's hugely restricting and it took forever to get anywhere. Also, really unpleasant to be in public transport in rush hour

Bobsyer · 14/09/2021 23:05

My mum didn’t even learn to drive till she moved out of London. Granted that was nearly 40 years ago but still!

I would say ask yourself when the car is necessary as opposed to other forms of transport. I have a car. I also have a bus pass but there are places I go to that I would not go to if I did not have the car if that makes sense. If i did not have the car there are things I could not do even though sometimes the car sits outside my house for days, I know it is there and it makes me feel safer and less isolated.

Also in London, two kids, no car. We hire one when we need it maybe once a month. Still cheaper than owning. Also stops us using a car for journeys we can walk or cycle, if we had a car I would be tempted to drive to the leisure centre, drop the kids off to school, go to the park - all less than a mile away !

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 14/09/2021 23:24

London... no problem. Buses, trains, underground, taxis...

Its when you want to leave London it becomes a problem.

RampantIvy · 14/09/2021 23:32

If I lived in London I wouldn't own a car either. I didn't learn to drive until I moved away from London.

MojoMoon · 14/09/2021 23:34

Only 35pc of households in some London boroughs have cars do clearly many, many people do without one

Zipcar (or similar) membership is great for short hires for the rare occasions you really do need to transport a fridge. Or you can hire a car for a week if you are going away on holiday. This will still be much cheaper than owning and and maintaining a car

Cycling is the way forward - have you tried an ebike? They are a delight.

YANBU

I learned to drive at 17, had a car at Uni but then when I moved abroad I sold the car. I moved to Madrid which has a brilliant public transport system (when I lived there until age 26 you could get a Young Person's travel card which allowed travel across the entire city centre on buses or metro for €20 a month) and when we moved back to England I considered buying a car but when I looked at the cost (initial outlay/tax/MOT/Insurance/repairs/Petrol etc) I just couldn't justify it, even with higher public transport costs.

DD and I live in the town centre, it's a 5 minute walk to the centre of town, 10 mins to DDs school, the main bus terminus is a 30second walk round the corner (and from there I can get to work, family and most essentials directly on those bus routes), the library is 5 mins away, the local theatre is 3 mins away, cinema 10 minutes, 3 supermarkets within 10 minute walk (as well as the one I work at which is a 20 minute walk or 8minute bus trip away) etc.

A bus pass is £42 a month for an adult, so about £10.50 a week, and £30 a month for children, so £7.50 a week so that's £72 a month for unlimited travel in our town (and ExDH and I split the cost of DDs travel card since she splits her time 50/50 between households, so it only costs me £57 a month for all of our travel). Even taking the odd taxi home from work, back from the supermarket (every 3/4 months I will do a big shop of things like laundry powder, big packs of loo roll, cleaning supplies etc which justifies the taxi cost) or to a venue for an event that isn't easily accessed by public transport, a bus pass +taxi fares is still cheaper than running a car.

The main thing is those occasional times you need a car, but I usually just hire a car/van etc for those very rare occasions there isn't a family member with a car available to help me out.

Hurrah for e-bikes! They are the BEST! Did you see the story that TfL put out on social media about the plumber who conducts much of his business by e-bike? It made me feel so encouraged.

You don't if you have the luxury of living and working in a town/city with great transportation link when you need them. Why would you bother having a car.

I live in rural Norfolk and work on-call. My nearest shop is 15 miles away. I can't live here without one and I can't afford to move to a more urban area either.
