To have just two dresses for work?

I am 27 weeks pregnant and work part-time around looking after our toddler DD. When I was no longer able able to fit into my normal work clothes, I bought two dresses to wear instead. They’re not the same, but very similar, and I alternate between them. My job is client facing, but we are not expected to be glamorous or polished, just neat, respectable, appropriate. I think these dresses fit the bill.

I now have a new line manager (who is a temp at the moment) and she asked me one day if I was wearing a uniform because I was always wearing the same dress. I said I just had the two dresses as I didn’t want to spend too much money on something I’d only wear a few months. She sort of sniggered and said “Really? Oh gosh”, then went back to her work.

Today I went in for a training day wearing a casual dress I keep for outside of work and trainers. She saw me and the first thing she said was “Woowww! A different dress!” I just smiled and shrugged.

AIBU to think this is a really weird thing to fixate and comment on? Or am I the weird one, only wearing two dresses to work?

People do notice changes.

I have a 'work uniform' of black linen trousers and the same shirt but in different colours.

On the odd occasion I wear a skirt or something different I usually get a comment.

It's not nasty just something people notice.

@Harriethen

No, she’s an utter cunt. Clearly a mean girl type that never grew up.
Absolutely this.

Tell her that if you admired her style you’d invite her to comment on your wardrobe. With a smile if you feel like it.

She’s a cow.

I’m in three days a week currently and I only have two dresses, I do have a pair of trousers and a couple of blouses too. But as far as I know no one has any issues with what I wear or how many times they’ve seen me in the same dress. What a weird thing to be bothered about.

I work 4 days and have two pairs of trousers and two tops that I alternate.

She's being utterly unprofessional. Does she comment on what your male colleagues wear as well?

Currently 30 weeks pregnant and if I were having to go into the office daily I'd be doing something very similar. I see no merit in spending a bunch of money for outfits that I'll only wear for another 10 weeks or so - provided you have enough clothes to be clean and presentable then what's the problem?

FolkyFoxFace · 17/09/2021 10:52

How ridiculous. I have always had a work uniform on rotation. It's cheaper, it's clean, and it saves a fortune. Especially in pregnancy - not a cat's chance in hell would I be buying an entirely new work wardrobe! Two dresses is absolutely fine.

Before I worked in a university, I worked in a gallery and had to wear all black. I had four dresses/tunics all in black that I would rotate. Four for winter and four for summer. Still have them and bring them out now for smart/casual events. I love the simplicity of knowing there's a uniform in my wardrobe that doesn't require any faffing with.

She is an idiot, I did the same when pregnant. Actually this is making me think I should do the same now that I'm not!

She's nasty.
