Bolt on side gate

I have an end of terrace house and the two adjacent houses have right of access accross my garden to use my side access for bins and maintenance etc

When I moved in my garden was open to the street. Ive put a gate on with a bolt on the inside (garden side). I did this so we didn’t need to faff around with keys etc . We can all unbolt from my garden and open gate when it’s needed. Therefore I have not obstructed their right to access.

One of my neighbours has asked if I can put a key lock on it so he can open it from the road. Which I guess I will have to do but am I being unreasonable to think he is being a pain in the arse and unreasonable?

If I live at number 1 he lives at number 3. So he has to travel through number 2s garden not just mine and that gate has a bolt. So even if I put a key lock on my side gate he still needs to go into his own garden to unlock number 2s Gate to get into my garden.

@TamzinGrey that is a great example of why he needs the access from road and not just from his garden. Thank you and sorry you had to go to such extremes

@Invisiblewoman1 You're obviously a lot more reasonable than my previous neighbour was Smile

KihoBebiluPute · 14/09/2021 19:34

You are perfectly reasonable to get a combination padlock so long as you have a hole in the gate so that all users can access it from either side. Like pp says access is access, you can't dictate from what direction or when, and your neighbour can't dictate that you don't have security to your property.

My grandma has a similar situation and as she’s now elderly it was causing her no end of stress with the constant neighbours in and out so we moved the gate to the top of the garden and put a second fence line in separating the garden from the gate if that makes sense? She did lose a little bit of garden but it was worth it to keep her garden private and secure.

That’s a good idea! OP could you do something like that? I would hate for people to be traipsing through my garden and would rather have a smaller garden to avoid that.

I don’t think I can move the gate as it’s on the deeds where it is so it would be a big legal move which I don’t have the money for or the energy with the hassle. It would be tricky to fence off at the moment as it’s close to the back of my house and I don’t want to look directly into a fence instead of my garden

Think idea was to move gate and access to the back of your garden fenced off. Neighbours may object as it would mean they need to roll ins the length of their garden and across. Abd back down along the pavement/access alley or whatever.

@HeronLanyon I know but I cannot move the access without changing deeds as it’s drawn on there.

There is a good side gate lock available in Screwfix, it even comes with the tools to attach it. Looks ideal for your situation and can be opened from eitber side.

if you want a lock (that is adequate for a gate but not exactly high security)

you can get a Fire Brigade lock (it has a standard key that firemen carry) which is quite a sturdy rimlock. There are not many locks that will stand up to weather outdoors.

There is no point in having high security on a gate that somebody fit can climb over.

you can get one that latches, and has a knob on the inside and a key on the outside, or you can get a deadlock that needs a key from both sides.

Prices and quality vary a lot but I can show you if you want.
