Better to olds mans darling than a young mans slave?

Admittedly this is a very old saying that my 98 gran recites, but wondering if this is true? Met up with a friend at the weekend who has 2 small children and is a full time mum. Her hubby is 18 years older than her so nearly 60. She admitted that he does most of the cooking and cleaning as well being a hands on dad. My gran also had a hubby that was 15 years older than her and always tells me he was ahead of his time and would be very attentive in family life. Is there any truth?

Interesting OP. I had not heard of it before

@Hardbackwriter

Yeah, when I see men who seek out women 20 years younger than them I always think 'well, he must be an absolute champion of gender equality'
😀😀😀

Very rare for it to work out like that.
Usually the younger wife becomes the carer for the older man, IME.

Grin.

Yep. By definition a man who wants a wife to be young enough to be his biological child does not want an equal partner.

Also that logic is really warped. Just because a bloke is older doesn't mean he's guaranteed not to fall out of love or turn into a lazy feckless bastard.

In my experience these sorts of old wives tales about marriage etc are usually designed to keep women in various boxes that suit men.

Let's make a new saying 'Better to marry a decent capable human than settle for a patriarchal prat'

Kanaloa · 14/09/2021 18:29

I mean the saying is true, but only because it’s better to be anyone’s darling than somebody’s slave.

So it’s better to be a young man’s darling than an old man’s slave. Or a bin man’s darling than a millionaire’s slave.

Whether or not you want to date someone who’s much older is a personal decision based on that specific person, not a generalised idea that older men will treat you better than younger men.

Different kettle of fish in 15 years or so.
I wouldn't want to be anyone's darling with the increased likelihood of being their carer in my prime, which statistically, is far far more likely to happen.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 14/09/2021 18:51

I'd rather be single than either of those scenarios, which I am.

I agree with the sentiment but can you make it rhyme?
Whinginadeville · 14/09/2021 19:06

Are you Jerri Hall?

BiscuitLover09876 · 14/09/2021 19:10

Never heard of it! Although as men tend to take longer to grow up, statistically you may be better off with a man 5 years older than 2 years younger. But that's about it!
