Can I asks what happens at your child's school if they have a positive case?

As my school as messaged to say they now have 3 cases in my child's class. Government guidance is that those in close contact should get a pcr test but we have only been told after the third case so how are people to know?

We are the third case btw and only found out by pure fluke of luck as my child is completely asymptomatic.

Had we known plans would have changed to protect vulnerable members of our family that we were due to see. It was only because we were seeing them I did a lateral flow on my primary aged child as a precaution and this group aren't told to do routine lateral flows.

I know this may well be guidance that they don't tell you but just wondered what other experience was as it seems like a bit of an oversight

My school are notifying parents of any positive cases in their child's class.

tiredanddangerous · 14/09/2021 19:37

Nothing. Schools have been told not to trace contacts. Anyone who tests positive isolates and everyone else just carries on as normal.

BluebellsGreenbells · 14/09/2021 19:45

We do practice caution but others may well not

You’ve been clearly told covid is now your own risk.

You’ve had the offer of vaccination and those who wanted it have had it.

Schools do not need to tell anyone about cases and certainly do not need to voice teachers personal medical status.

Everyone needs to test for the great good of the school, however, I don’t blame anyone for not testing ‘well’ children. Why would you?

Evesgarden · 14/09/2021 19:48

The child stays off. Thats it. There was a positive case in my dds class, I only found out because the mother messaged me, the school didn't inform us at all.

Autumngoldleaf · 14/09/2021 19:54

All of us need to realise anyone around us could have it or have someone at home +.

Schools can't force dc to test, they can only "recomend".

Many dc don't test for what ever reasons.

I have + at home I've been told to do pcr (work whilst awaiting test result), and carry on.

I've let my colleagues know, but really I should not have because they could catch it anywhere then blame me and I'm just following gov guidance and my work "orders" to work.

This is the reality.. It's pretty much letting it rip. I'm interested in what happens next!

xksismybestletter · 14/09/2021 19:58

It's the same as the rest of the country isn't it though?

Why would they send home a whole class when they don't send home a whole factory.

zigzag56445 · 14/09/2021 20:02

I'm in Ireland. Child in my sons class tested positive at the weekend. Mother rang the school to tell them. Whole class were asked to stay home yesterday until the HSE contacted the school. 6 kids at his table were identified as cc yesterday and have to restrict movements for 10 days and have a negative test on day 10 before they can go back. The rest went back to school this morning.

PTW1234 · 14/09/2021 20:09

Does anyone know if the 5 in a class is a fixed rule (sorry derail) my school is a one form entry small school and there are only 20 ish kids left in DS class.

5 is a large number when class sizes are that small

Juanbablo · 14/09/2021 20:12

No idea at primary as not heard of any cases but two of mine are at secondary and we've not been notified of positive cases, I've only known of them from the children themselves.

TiddleTaddleTat · 14/09/2021 20:14

@PTW1234 no not a fixed rule in England. Higher number of confirmed positives in my DC's class and, while PHE have been consulted, children with no symptoms / negative tests are still going in as usual

PTW1234 · 14/09/2021 20:20

Thanks @TiddleTaddleTat we have some vulnerable family members who are now eligible for the booster.

Feels a little bit like limbo for those of us with CEV or elderly friends or relatives until boosters are rolled out

Secnarf · 14/09/2021 20:33

The rules now are that children and double vaxxed adults isolate if PCR positive or symptomatic and waiting for result, but even if close contact/household contact or awaiting PCR, they do not self isolate.

Last week, we were contacted as a child in wraparound care tested positive and asked that my daughter had a PCR, but it explicitly stated she did not have to self isolate. Keeping an asymptomatic contact child off school whilst awaiting the PCR result would count as an unauthorised absence in our school.

Fortunately this happened at the end of the week, so we could use our own judgement for the weekend, and cancel our plans until the PCR result returned. However, had we continued with our normal activity, from the point of possible contact to the latest time that we would have expected the PCR to come back, she would have been in contact with 9 mainly mutually exclusive groups of people (her year group, wraparound care, extended family meet up, play date with friend at another school, and 5 different extra-curricular activities). It’s a great way to spread it all around.

(Oh, and as I am double-vaccinated, I would have been expected to go to work if her PCR was positive, even though I work with people with poor immune systems).

Our school are only following the government guidance. We all thought it was a bit bonkers after all we went through to keep the school 'Covid safe' for the last 12 months (I work there). But clearly the government want it to rip through primary schools.

My parents are refusing to see me and the DC now, not even in the garden. That's their choice (not CEV, but very anxious), but I was extremely upset, but I can't change how they feel.

Not heard a thing from DC1's secondary, so I assume it's the same there. Cases are high locally so I assume there are cases at high school.

Me and DC1 are doing regular lateral flow tests, and previously we were all testing before seeing my parents.

LittleOwl153 · 14/09/2021 20:55

Having seen this from both sides...

My kids school is rife with it. 18 out in 1 class, 23 in another plus others dotted through the school. School have sent texts at the first in each class. Nothing further. (Our year has posted on the class Facebook when there's been a positive but that is entirely unofficial and parents choice).

School side are not tracking anyone. My primary kid was asked by t&t which school he went to. My secondary kid was asked to provide names, addresses and contact phone numbers of all those she has been incontact with at school- teachers included - they would not record anyone without personal phone number and address. I laughed. School are not keeping this data now and have not been approached by it. School are limited by what they can release due to data protection.

Rainer · 14/09/2021 21:09

@secnarf I'm the same but my work has made the decision that we have to stay away. Having been asked to work as a close contact earlier in the pandemic I'm very grateful for this as it was terrifying to feel I could be infecting people.

Well this just sounds all very shambolic - I was ge homely hoping not for another lockdown.

halcyondays · 14/09/2021 22:55

We used to get an email when there was a case in school but they have stopped now. Dd1 says there have been a couple of cases in her class, a few others were sent home as close contacts. There are more cases in the year groups as well. None in dd2’s year group that she knows of.

TiddleTaddleTat · 15/09/2021 07:38

@PTW1234 shambolic sums it up about right.
Or intentionally reckless, expecting that all children will catch it, and their families, therefore providing immunity and reducing the need for boosters in non vulnerable ?

BluebellsGreenbells · 15/09/2021 07:43

The government want people to catch it now.

There won’t be a lockdown, because that costs money.

What happens is businesses will have to close as staff isolate or off with covid children and the cost will be on the business and parents will have to take unpaid leave.

Therefor won’t cost government money.

Covid is at your own risk the same as any other disease. You weren’t emailed about chicken pox or anything else, this is now coming into line with those diseases.
