Should I take new job?

I have been offered a new job today.

I have asked for time to consider it overnight. My main issue, is the salary. I currently earn £42500. The new salary is £50000.

I am considering going back and asking for a higher salary but I don't want to sound greedy. AIBU to ask? Without a greater increase, I don't think its worth my while taking the risk on a new company. I live in Scotland so everything above £43k receives 41% tax. The new employer pays 10% rather than 14% (current employer) pension contributions. Travel will be £35 per week more.

I would make a list of pros and cons. And also remind yourself why you applied for the job eg development etc. I've done sideways moves for the same money (let alone more) because I knew in long term they would lead to better opportunities and promotion which they did. I think almost £8k more is great unless the new role as significantly higher level of responsibility.

Work out your additional travel per week and the difference in pension contributions. Does that break even? Compare numbers with numbers. Then consider whether the non-£ benefits make the job worth it.

Well it's not almost £8k. Its 7.5k - £7k of which is taxed at 41%. So in terms of take home pay that's about £4500 extra.

£35 extra per week in travel is £1820 per year. Meaning the total extra comes down to £2680.plus a reduced pension.

OP - I guess it depends whether you would enjoy the job more and whether it's a step onto other things.

Always ask for more, your entry is your only opportunity.

I would go back and counter - work out the value of the loss in pension plus the additional travel costs (grossed up) and ask for that on top, explaining the rational. It’s always better to negotiate with a justification, in my experience.

Also, can you spin a story about how you are walking away from x% bonus by leaving now and ask for that as a signing on fee. Has worked for me twice now, as it’s easier for them to agree a one off payment.

What would make you take it? Ask for £3k more than that.
