Can just walk out of school and no one notice

Today DS1 age 11 and with SN walked out of school and came home (30 minuet bus ride) because he was being picked on.
This is the 3rd time he has done this and I have had to phone the school to say he was home with me, the school have not noticed once . I have made an appointment with the Senco, but DS1 has a LSA so why the heck can he just walk out when he cant cope.

Thankfully he has always called me and said "mum I cant cope I am coming home" and thankfully I am a sahm so I am here, but all the same he is 11 and far too little to be able to just walk out, he has a full statement and an LSA should be with him.

Also if no one knows he is not there and there is a fire at the school, he will be on the register as in school when he is not.

I've heard of this happening with other children with SN. You're not the first. It's really bad. The boy I knew (now at a special school) walked out of his mainstream school and crossed 2 roads- he was about 8 at the time.

I'd really complain.

fedupwasherwoman · 04/12/2007 14:41

Being a bit naughty,I maybe would not have telephoned them so that they could eventually experience the heart stopping panic/terror of realising they had lost one of the children supposedly in their care. Then they might take steps to stop it happening again in the future.

coldtits · 04/12/2007 14:43

I agree with washerwoman. If there is a next time, don't ring them and tell them, and see how long it takes for them to ring you!

IsawKIMIkissingSantaClaus · 04/12/2007 15:43

The first time he did it I waited to see if they called me and when they did not by the end of the school day I called them. The second time he did it I did not tell them and they did not call me at all, I am really scared that he could come to harm on the way home, thankfully he is a very bright child and has always called me and come straight home.

I am waiting for a phone call to arrange an appointment to talk to the senco.
