Staying at a hotel for a very rare night away. Woke up with a massive nose bleed. It's all over the pillow case and bed. It's stopped now but oh my god I've never had that bad a nose bleed! I obviously woke up but not until I'd bled everywhere. My issue is I had to use a flannel to stop the bleeding as we didn't get a full roll of loo roll and I used it all stemming the bleeding then when that ran out I had to use the flannel, it was white and now it's very pink. I've got it in soak but do I offer to pay for the flannel and bedding or just take the flannel? It's had so much blood on it it's beyond saving really, as I'm on blood thinners so it took a long time to stem the bleeding.

I'm really embarrassed. I don't want some poor housekeeping person to have to put this in the bin, the pillow case and bed isn't too bad I mean it's obvious it's blood but it's salvageable. However the flannel is awful. Do

I worked in housekeeping for a big hotel chain and I really wouldn't have cared, just chucked it in with the other laundry

Whysotired · 13/09/2021 08:08

I honestly wouldn’t worry. Mention to reception in departure. I’ve worked in hotels for over 10 years and if bedding/towels are strained due to injury/child bed wetting/periods/sick through illness (not through alcohol) it is very much more about if the guest is okay. I wouldn’t offer to pay. Offer to bag up due to it being a body fluid and explain it was due to a nose bleed. The hotel will more than likely bin or just send back to the laundry service to destroy if it’s as stained as you have mentioned. Hope you are okay!

Don't feel bad OP! I used to have nosebleeds in my sleep, it always looks so much worse on white pillows but they'll sort it no problem.
When I was a teen I completely terrified my bf at the time when it happened at his house. He woke up and saw me asleep on a blood soaked pillow and thought I'd died in my sleep! He started screaming, his mum came running in, it was so embarrassing!

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 13/09/2021 08:25

One of my DS got a massive nosebleed in his sleep on holiday-suspect it was from the flight.

When I say massive it looked like a murder scene because he was a thrashy sleeper and it was sorry if TMI very thick and clotted and absolutely everywhere.

It was fine-I think hotels see it all and this is just one of those things.

He had one like that at home once and as I was stuffing the blood stained pillow in the bin I did look around to see if any of the neighbours saw me and thought I was removing the evidence from a crime scene!

HunterHearstHelmsley · 13/09/2021 08:27

Just let reception or housekeeping know. Its not a big deal or something to be embarrassed by.

Mrgrinch · 13/09/2021 08:43

When there are things like blood and vomit, housekeeping don't clean that. They have to have it cleaned by a specialist to ensure there's no chance of housekeeping or future guests catching anything.

You may be charged extra if the mattress is soiled but probably not if it's just the bedding and flannel.

I'd strip the bed and fold it all in a pile so that they don't touch it without gloves by accident. Let reception know and they should be fine about it hopefully.

Confusedandshaken · 13/09/2021 09:06

Leave the sheets thrown back so they can see the stains and if you want leave a note for housekeeping. Apart from that, don't worry.

Blood washes out of cotton very well - I speak from the experience of two home births and DH's twin curses of nose bleeds and haemorrhoids. If an amateur like me can repeatedly get the stained sheets and pillow cases pristine again a professional laundry will have no problems at all. It's all in a days work for them.

MindyStClaire · 13/09/2021 09:08

This happened to my dad once, he was on aspirin long term and bled a lot from something minor all over the sheets. He just told housekeeping in the corridor, they were fine.

Florencenotflo · 13/09/2021 09:12

Leave them a note explaining, they will be fine.

I've had to do this twice, Dd was 18 months old and spectacularly vomited everywhere in the night. I stripped the bedding off and left it bundled up.

The second time was when both DD's got hold of a pack of bourbons on the side in a hotel we were staying at and happily tucked in while I was in the adjoining room unpacking (thought they were quiet!). The bed sheets looked... interesting! So I left a note explaining it was definitely chocolate biscuits, nothing else 😂

I'm sure they've had to deal with much worse than a nose bleed on the sheets.

cansu · 13/09/2021 09:20

The costs for stuff like this are factored into the price you pay. I would put it in a bag and leave a note explaining.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 13/09/2021 09:21

It's good manners to pre-warn housekeeping so they can factor in the extra time required to clean the room/bed etc properly for the next guest. They will only have an allotted time to turn the room around.

But they can either have the cost reimbursed by insurance/linen company so don't worry about that. Although I"m sure your offer would be appreciated.

@Walkerbean16

my son had a nose bleeding on his bed cover at an airbnb. we put it in cold water and told them as we left, (they lived in a different part of the house) 10 minutes later she called us crying that we needed to pay £100 for a new (single) sheet as she couldnt get it out. I'm still pissed off about it 2 years later, she didn't even try and get it out.
Fucking hell, £100 for a single bed sheet - judging by your pissed off comment, you paid it? She saw you coming!
whynotwhatknot · 13/09/2021 09:23

i had a massive nosebleed in the hotel in America i left housekeeping a note apologising was all dealt with discretely . they, see all sorts

Teakind · 13/09/2021 09:34

I'd strip it for them but not sure if its strictly necessary. Please don't worry about it as I'm sure they've seen far worse.

Not quite the same but when my DD was younger she picked up a sickness bug on holiday and was sick all over the bed. The smell was awful so I stripped it all off and put it in the bath. I then waited for housekeeping to explain what had happened and gave them a decent tip for having to handle it. The were very kind about it and didn't make me feel bad at all.

Bakewellisntjustacake · 13/09/2021 10:27

Thank you! I don't feel so bad now!

At the very least I'd inform reception so they can prewarn the housekeeping team. I have worked in various hotels and how they deal with soiled linens vary, but a heads up that they exist is always appreciated.

With a small amount of stained items I'd probably strip them off the bed and either bag them up (the bag from the bedroom or bathroom bin is more than sufficient) or leave them in the bathroom sink, that way the housekeeping can keep them separate and they don't have to directly touch the items to strip them from the bed.

If it was a larger amount- eg if it had gone on the sheets and/or duvet cover - when I informed reception I would ask them what they wanted me to do with the items. Some hotels would rather you just left everything in situ and they would just allocate more time to your room turnover and others would appreciate if the soiled items were stripped off the bed.

TheCanyon · 13/09/2021 11:12

My dm is a hotel manager. People regularly piss and shit the bed and say bugger all so I honestly don't think they'll remotely care about a blood stained face cloth.

Member984815 · 13/09/2021 11:17

Just explain what happened
