Where would you pick? 4 day city break, it's my birthday treat...
Help!

OP, I hope you like it. It's one of my favourite places in the world. I'm envious! Only been there in summer and would love to go in winter too. Have a fabulous time.

The ruins bars are fun if you go before the lairy crowds. The secret wartime cave hospital built into the hill in Buda is fascinating, so is the candlelit cave church. I liked the small apothecary museum too. The funicular and children's railway (operated by young teenagers) is fun. The musical fountain on Margret pleasure island, a cruise along the Danube (just take the river bus - good as any other); the stunning indoor market halls, the designer shops, art nouvaeu cafes and metro stations along Andrassy.

I love all of it.

@PinkFootstool

Budapest. Go to the Szechenyi hot baths - incredible.

I've been to both Venice and Budapest, and would love go back to Budapest tomorrow just to spend a week in those baths!

Yes to going to these baths, we went when we were out there for the Christmas markets and it was fantastic.

Last time we stayed in the 7 Seasons near Deak Ferenc so very central.

They do breakfast but there are lots of places nearby. Cathedral and Fishermen's Bastion are a must.

Amazing recommendations - thank you all.
Does anyone know the best place to try authentic stuffed cabbage as my dh really want to have this while we're there and it's so easy to end up in a touristy place!

Thanks

Both are fantastic Cities that I love, but for a November trip it's Budapest without a doubt, the Christmas market and shops will be open and it's beautiful. Also recommend the hot spring baths, great fun.

I've decided to book a Budapest city break as a result of this thread (thanks OP!) so bumping for more hotel recommendations.

DerAlteMann · 13/09/2021 16:08

Budapest. Venice can be cold, wet and miserable in November.

UniBallEye · 13/09/2021 17:09

oooh maybe we'll see you there @ButYouGottaHaveASkillJeff Grin

Didn't like Venice at all; everyone was unfriendly and the food was shocking.
Budapest from this thread sounds wonderful. I might go, if I can face the Covid travel shenanigans...

BlackboardMonitorVimes · 13/09/2021 17:28

I would recommend a visit to the Memento park. It's a place full of statues (mostly Russian era) that they took down but didn't get rid of. Really interesting place.

Re. The stuffed cabbage , I asked my brother who lives in Budapest.
He says they don't generally serve it in posh restaurants or fusion food places. Perhaps try upstairs in the Market Place there's an eatery there that locals frequent.

NalPolishRemover · 14/09/2021 07:52

@stonebrambleboy thank you very much for that info. I had actually googled it & that place in the market hall was listed as one of the recommended places to try stuffed cabbage. I really appreciate you asking your brother on our behalf..

So many amazing recommendations on this thread, I've written them down in my notebook. Thank you all! I'm so excited to go now but I love planning & researching new places, it's a huge part of the fun for me.

Peridot1 · 14/09/2021 09:56

I hope you have a fab time @UniBallEye. I lived in Budapest for 7 years and some of the recommendations on here are new to me!

I lived on the Buda side and my drive into the city - Pest side - was along the Danube and the view never failed to give me goosebumps. It’s such a stunning view along the river.

PTW1234 · 14/09/2021 10:00

I have been to both, you need dry weather for Venice.

I LOVE Budapest, it’s been 10 years and would love to go back. We went in summer and did a lot of sun bathing. I would love to go back in winter and try some of the winter activities.

UniBallEye · 14/09/2021 14:07

I'm so excited about it all - so many brilliant suggestions!
