To keep a chicken this long?

So, I always buy a chicken for Christmas instead of a turkey. Today I spotted one in Waitrose, reduced from £17 to £2. So I grabbed it and thought 'I'll freeze that for Xmas.'

I'm a vegetarian so makes no odds to me but can it be frozen this long? It says freeze for up to one month on the packaging.

So ... would you freeze now for use in December? I don't need to do this and can buy another but thought may as well grab it now

Your thoughts?

I think you follow the guidance on the packaging. Do you think they would make that bit up?

Hellocatshome · 11/09/2021 18:33

No I wouldnt I got very bad food poisoning once from eating some chicken that had been frozen for a very long time, I think probably more like 9 months to a year but I have stuck to the freezing instructions religiously since then.

@Burnamer yes. They probably pop it on there for lols

Even if it doesn't go off, it'll dry out in the freezer for that long. It will end up really tasteless and dry.

Hmm, now I often freeze chicken fillets for a few months, defrost in fridge overnight and use the next day. This was the first time I'd spotted the one month thing on the packaging. Admittedly I don't go as long as I'm thinking of doing this time

I never follow the freezing instructions.

Better have a sort out of the freezer soon to make sure I haven't had anything lurking for too long Shock

Didn't think of the tasteless drying out thing. OK, I'll just roast it in the next few weeks I think

I would 100% save it until Christmas, its not that far off now really.

It'll be fine - it will all be in the cooking. My hubby cooks things slow with plenty of fat and they turn our gorgeous. Last year he used mayo under the turkey skin and it was gorgeously moist.

It's up to you! Reminds me of the saying "it's a freezer, not a time machine" though 😁

I'm planning on buying some joints to freeze now for Christmas. I've only ever had a bit of freezer burn on meats which have been in their too long and not been wrapped properly. Never had an issue with food poisoning.

picklemewalnuts · 11/09/2021 18:57

Gosh yes. Regularly keep things that bit longer than it says.

I did watch Jamie Oliver from 2013 and he recommended grease proof paper and layers of cling film.
