..to think that I actually might die from exhaustion?

Wahooooooo · 11/09/2021 10:17

Bloody fucking bastard peri-menopausal insomnia and all the bloody sweating. Am on HRT (4 pumps of oestrogel per day) which has helped the worst of the night sweats but the insomnia, OMG the insomnia.

I can’t help thinking if men had to live this bloody half life of existing on snatches of sleep and permanently exhausted it would be addressed more sympathetically and supportively (and quickly). I’m honestly more tired now than I was when dc were newborns (not underestimating that tiredness btw, I’m with you fellow sleep-deprived sisters - at least you have a scrumptious baby to look at in the morning. I’ve got the reflection of a fat bag lady, ungrateful teenagers and endless chores).

Anyway I don’t care what you vipers say. I know I ANBU to say I might die of exhaustion and I’ll fight anyone who says otherwise

Zzzzzzzz.

Also, as if we haven’t got enough on our plates, there’s a link between long term use of anti histamines and dementia.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 12/09/2021 10:59

I'm with you. 51 and have been going through this for 4 years. I would get the sleep meds if I were you, if only to give yourself a proper night's sleep a couple of times a week. I've had amitryptiline and also phenergen is good which you can get over the counter from pharmacy.

Oh good god is there really? My doctor assured me it was ok!

I've been taking antihistamines to sleep for over a year.

Had raging insomnia for 30 years.

HemanOrSheRa · 12/09/2021 11:56

Yesterday I cleaned the house, did yoga, cooked, shopped, catered to teens and walked 10k. Did I sleep ? Nooooooo Ugh. Same here Fallsballs. I literally don't stop all day but no matter how tired I am I cannot sleep through the night. I either can't get off to sleep, wake up at 4am or fall asleep at a reasonable time but wake up after a couple of hours. Sometimes it's a combination. It's horrendous when it's night after night.

OP I'd get the mirena removed if I were you and ask for utrogestan which is a body identical micronised progesterone. I take this magnesium supplement. It contains 3 different types of magnesium.

I tried to order this (thanks for the great idea) but I got a message that “the product selection cannot be delivered by the available carriers”. Maybe it is a Brexit thing?

Thunderface · 12/09/2021 15:33

I bought Phenergan today. I was in Boots and saw it behind the counter. The assistant didn't ask me anything.
I had it prescribed when I was in hospital with HG and it knocked me out.
I'm going to try it tonight.

Moomin37 · 12/09/2021 15:39

@Wahooooooo Sorry to hear about the lack of sleep. Sorry if this has been mentioned as I haven't been able to read the full thread, but dare I say it, Utrogestan tables knock me out at night - they are like taking Nytol for me. I assume they are an alternative source of progesterone to Mirena? Might be worth a try.

iamprobablynotyourcupoftea · 12/09/2021 16:00

Hi understand totally
Get ridiculous menopause symptoms because of tamoxifen. May as well had not had a shower yesterday BlushConfused. Sending hugs 🤗

Rupertpenrysmistress · 12/09/2021 16:23

I can relate to all of this. I take nytol for a couple of nights to reset my sleep, it does work but it can make you feel quite sleepy next day. I have also started taking sage supplements to see if they help with my epic night sweats, I have cut down caffeine, take menopace and red clover. I plan to try this for 3 months if no Improvement my GP if happy for me to start HRT.

I am 44 and my worst symptoms are night sweats, insomnia and more frequent/heavy periods.

I might try a pair of the sweat wicking PJ's mentioned too. I am also dragging myself put to run/walk and it helps although difficult. I empathise totally I just feel so old and lost.

Rupertpenrysmistress · 12/09/2021 16:38

Also if you have audible you can get fantastic free sleep hypnosis books, I listened to one yesterday and it really helped.

Iheartmysmart · 12/09/2021 16:48

@Egghead68 I buy my melatonin from a company called Biovea. They ship from the US I think - free delivery on orders over £39.

WellyBoot12345 · 12/09/2021 17:04

Come across this thread at the right time! 47, stressed to high heaven and constantly awake through the night panicking about work. Not sure how much is due to work related stress and how much is peri-menopause, but am going to order something … anything … to try to stay asleep. I can fall asleep quickly because I’m on my knees but wake constantly. Anyone with experience of which tablets are the best for staying asleep?

Porridgeislife · 12/09/2021 17:19

I’m in medical menopause due to Zoladex. Between 3.30 and 6am I was both awake and stricken with anxiety, it was horrendous.

Would highly recommend melatonin, I took the 3mg ones and started off taking 4 at a time before tapering down to one. I order from Biovea and it comes quickly.

Annoyingly the other things that help are daily exercise (just force yourself), eating properly (less crap, no booze) and meditation every night. If I don’t keep it up, my insomnia creeps back in.

I also find it useful to stick in AirPods & listen to an Audible book rather than browse my phone or read my Kindle, sometimes it helps me back to sleep.

Adarajames · 12/09/2021 18:58

I take 100mg amitriptyline, melatonin, pre-gabalin, codine and sometimes diazepam, all say ‘may cause drowsiness’ and I wish they bloody would, I’m utterly exhausted and still go whole nights without any sleep at all!! So I feel your pain, and I’ve still got menopause to come!! Angry Sad

megletthesecond · 12/09/2021 19:02

I often wonder this. Menopausal working lone parent. I'm basically numb and just stumble through each day.

Younger kids were so much easier than teens who stay up and don't let me sleep.

TheHouseILiveIn · 12/09/2021 19:08

@Egghead68 it will be because you need a prescription in the UK for Melatonin.

TheHouseILiveIn · 12/09/2021 19:10

Can I just say that it is so unfair that women go through this? Men don't. God, if he exists, and yes he is definitely not a woman definitely hates us Angry

TheHouseILiveIn · 12/09/2021 19:19

The progesterone part of HRT is to guard against endometrial cancer so the Mirena is sufficient even though it's a low dose. But yes, progesterone is the sleepy hormone so maybe Mirena is not enough. But then again many women struggle with the side effects of progesterone in hrt. We can't win.

Squidlydoo · 12/09/2021 19:36

I thought I was perimenopausal with horrific insomnia, night sweats and heavy period.

Blood tests found I had an underactive thyroid and many of the symptoms are the same.

I totally agree that if men suffered like this- more would be done!

Feather9 · 12/09/2021 20:07

Evening all im nearly 53 yes lots of night sweats
No sleep and when someone upsets me I feel like I could take on Mike Tyson and believe me I would even though I’m knackered on hrt not really sure if it helps

Notaroadrunner · 12/09/2021 22:49

@didihearthatright123456

I think I’m peri menopausal, I also have 2 year old twins and the exhaustion is epic. I also might actually scratch the skin off my head at this rate. Never ever been so itchy in my life. Building up the courage to call the GP……….
Have you any other symptoms? If not, not being funny but have you checked for nits?

I sleep better if I take an antihistamine but they make me feel drowsy into the next morning. Still, worth it the odd night to stay asleep for most of the night.

Wahooooooo · 14/09/2021 00:17

@dane8 - are you sure it is all menopausal? If you are 10yrs post menopause and these have all returned then I think you need to see a GP and check something else is not going on.

Thanks for all the brilliant suggestions on here. I am just so sorry to hear how shit it is for us all. Bloody bastard peri/menopause.
