The price of butter and general price rises

My favourite Kerrygold has just jumped from £1.90 to £2.00. We use a lot of it with the dcs' toast addiction. The price of butter has risen steadily over the years but that's a big jump. Is Brexit to blame as it's imported from Ireland? I've noticed things increasing in general but not to this extent all at once. It is it covid related? Or is butter a luxury now?

Butter has steadily crept up for ages. No way we could spend 2quid a pack. Brand down and save some. H&B is £1.19 and Farmfoods is a quid.

Mindymomo · 11/09/2021 10:08

Most items I usually buy have increased in price or gotten smaller, cakes in particular. I now try and buy what’s on offer and stock up, but my grocery bill has definitely increased by about £20 each week.

FlatteredFool · 11/09/2021 10:10

What's H&B?

We shop at Morrisons and tend to buy own brand things and can't say we've seen a big rise? Smile

daytripper28 · 11/09/2021 10:15

YABU buying Kerrygold - so yeah.

Own brand butter in Aldi has not gone up - maybe switch brands??

Didiusfalco · 11/09/2021 10:15

I’ve noticed price rises too. I think it’s a mixture of covid and brexit. I think the problems caused by brexit have been neatly swept under the carpet by the pandemic.

Mintjulia · 11/09/2021 10:16

I buy English butter for 40p per pack less than that. My bread is up 5p a large loaf and the cost of a few other things is up a little, but not much. and food is much less expensive in the UK than it is elsewhere in Europe. British veg prices are good because we've had warm wet weather.

Overall, I'm still spending £45 - £50 a week for two of us. I'm buying less generally and using more carefully, to avoid waste.

MaskingForIt · 11/09/2021 10:16

It’s the delicious price of sovereignty.

Use a supermarket own brand or encourage your child to use moderation.

Haggisfish3 · 11/09/2021 10:18

Even own brand is more expensive. About £1.60.

MrsPworkingmummy · 11/09/2021 10:19

Lurpack has definitely increased and I've noticed most of my usual items have increased by 10/20p which is quite a hike in an overall pack of shopping.

Annoyedanddissapointed · 11/09/2021 10:20

Asda butter has gone up just 4 pence over last I think 3 years iirc

ClemFandangoCanYouHearMe · 11/09/2021 10:20

Here in NZ a block of butter is around $6.50 so £3.25 ish. Everytime my parents come over from England to visit they offer to buy a trolley of shopping then recoil in horror at the prices.

The price of butter and milk is often cited in the media as part of the outrage of the cost of living over here!

MurielSpriggs · 11/09/2021 10:28

Just wait until the UK actually implements Brexit properly by enforcing the border controls which it was supposed to introduce at the beginning of this year, but has had to keep postponing because it didn't plan properly, and doesn't have the staff or infrastructure to implement. Importing anything has certainly been made more complicated already, but you ain't seen nothing yet Grin

thetesdybears · 11/09/2021 10:29

10p is not too bad but obvs it all adds up. I've noticed a few things I buy jump from £1 to £1.25! Haven't noticed a massive increase in general though.

I buy lurpack spreadable and found 500g tub in home bargains the other day for £2.75. It's sometimes £4 in the supermarket!

gingercat02 · 11/09/2021 10:29

Good Irish butter (Kerrygold is as good as you get generally in the UK) a different thing completely from Lurpak 🤮 or even English butter but it's always been expensive. It's probably transport costs going up due to driver issues, so yes Brexit

Bakingtraypan · 11/09/2021 10:31

Hope were all loving Brexit - was it worth every penny?

caughtinanet · 11/09/2021 10:35

You're really lucky if you've only just noticed the price of one item going up. Are you a news avoider?

This is massive issue with no one simple answer and not restricted only one brand of butter We all need to be taking this seriously.

FlatteredFool · 11/09/2021 10:37

@daytripper28 why am I unreasonable to buy Kerrygold?

I used to buy Tesco own brand. It was about 85p a few years back. Then I bought Waitrose own. I've tried Asda own. I like Kerrygold best. I make my own bread and it needs good butter. I buy own brand lots of things like tea, biscuits, laundry detergent .

Irish person here, brought up on Kerrygold and even I opt for the aldi real butter brand as it's cheaper...and in my opinion tastes the same 👍

doggydaft · 11/09/2021 10:39

I have found the price of my usual shopping has increased a fair bit. I'm feeding 5 adults.
I've really started shopping around rather than just using tesco online which I've done for years.
I'd say I'm spending on average about £20 more a week on a bill of £100-£130.

AgentJohnson · 11/09/2021 10:42

Prices are rising everywhere, not just in the UK. Any money I saved by not going away is going to be eaten up by food and utilities price rises.

I love me some kerrygold! However, it’s in a tub hidden under spinach so DD never reaches for it.

RJnomore1 · 11/09/2021 10:44

You buy whatever butter you like Op.

Yes I’m general things are definitely more expensive. Wine seems to have gone up a lot (priorities, I suppose I could drink tap water eh 🙄)

FlatteredFool · 11/09/2021 10:45

@caughtinanet I only noticed when I was doing an online shop for my mum. It was on offer last week at £1.70. I've noticed packets getting smaller on things like chocolate and I'm sure kitkats are smaller than they were. I tend to stock up when things are on offer.

I don't have an Aldi within walking distance and they don't deliver.

OP posts:
beigebrownblue · 11/09/2021 10:47

There are a few things you could do.
Wait for special offer and then place bulk bought butter in freezer.

Tesco site put in search box 'Aldi price match'.

Get the point about making your own bread and wanting nice butter. It is so useful and if you do it right healthy to make own bread and such a useful snack.

Also to knock price down further use cashback websites.

FlatteredFool · 11/09/2021 11:03

I sometimes make my own butter too but that's usually just for making and putting in and on scones. I have a big carton of cream in the freezer that I might defrost for baking some later.
