AIBU to be upset with myself for monumentally wasting money?

I bought train tickets yesterday. It's a journey that's always expensive, regardless of how far in advance you book. I was mucking about trying to see if adding another railcard (we already have one) would make it cheaper. Found out it doesn't much, so just went ahead. I thought. But actually I've just checked my email now and I've somehow bought two lots of tickets - one using the railcard we have, one using the fantasy railcard. We travel tomorrow. The site says I can only get a refund within two hours of booking and twelve hours of the train leaving. I've requested one anyway but they're going to say no aren't they?

So I've paid over £100 for two people to travel 50 miles. That's around 10% of my take home pay. I'm so, so annoyed with myself for paying twice for tickets that are overpriced anyway.

This is a journey I have to do quite frequently. I already feel stressed every time I do it over how much it costs. And now I've made it cost twice as much just through being stupid. I feel really upset and down about this.

Take the extra tickets to the station and see if you can find someone who wants to buy them off you. You might make something back.

StupidAroundComputers · 11/09/2021 01:01

That would be a possibility but they're etickets.

You'll be able to prove its a replica.
I did the same with something else & got my money back.

Ponoka7 · 11/09/2021 01:12

We all occasionally make mistakes. You might touch lucky. Don't let it spoil your trip.

Kanaloa · 11/09/2021 01:25

That’s annoying, but it’s just a mistake.

I was once booking two tickets for an expensive play for DH and I for his birthday which was in two months. All booked and fine, until I got an email with my tickets, which I had booked for that same night, in London, many many miles from where we live.

Ended up buying the same tickets twice but I was furious with myself.

Kanaloa · 11/09/2021 01:26

So I’d just write it off as a mistake if they won’t refund it. DH and I laugh about the play tickets now, every time someone mentions the venue (it’s pretty famous) DH will say ‘yes, it’s VERY expensive there, twice what it should be really.’

DdraigGoch · 11/09/2021 01:27

Worth contacting the agent you bought them from, they may refund even though the policy doesn't technically cover it.

'GET yer tickets 'ere, Going cheap, anyone, twofertheprice!'...

Should she take a box to stand on?

It's not a replica. She'll have booked different seats. There's no way to prove they weren't for another couple who just haven't shown up.
LunaAndHerMoonDragons · 11/09/2021 01:46

Could you change the date to when you're next going of they won't refund? Even if there's a small admin fee that would be less money lost.

starfishmummy · 11/09/2021 01:48

Don't horrible memories of a housemate who pulled out of a theatre booking last minute. She asked us to see if the ticket could be returned to the box office, which was a no as there were seats still available. Then one of our group decided we should stand outside to see if we could sell it. So embarrassing!! I'm surprised we didn't get arrested as ticket touts!!

MorriseysGladioli · 11/09/2021 01:56

What a pisser.
Don't get too fed up yet, though.
They may just possibly refund, or you could, as someone says, possibly be allowed to pay and change them to another date.
Someone might be looking for just those tickets and buy them.

That's 3 possible slight chances.

The tickets don't sound that expensive if you've spent £100 on four tickets then the tickets are only around £25 per person.

What a dickhead comment @user1471457751. The OP has already explained they represent 10% of her net salary.

Booknooks · 11/09/2021 06:43

Who did you buy them through? Trainline usually refund if the tickets aren't collected, if someone else then I would phone them and say I made an error, nought to lose.

sandgrown · 11/09/2021 06:44

We booked a group ticket to London , from the North, for 8 people . Only 7 of us so I offered the “free” trip to people waiting to buy a ticket . They all declined. I must look dodgy!

OP has explained the financials and to OP they are expensive. So don't be so nasty we don't all have money to burn.

www.nationalrail.co.uk/times_fares/ticket_types/46594.aspx link with info on changing or returning ticket depending on the type you bought OK. It looks hopeful for you on there to at least be able to change the dates, get a voucher credit, or maybe a refund.

fingerbuffet · 11/09/2021 07:01

Don't feel bad. ,I dread going anywhere by train because the booking system is too complicated. ...I am sure I heard they are going to reform it and simplify it.

spinachandchickpea · 11/09/2021 07:02

I would phone the rail co or trainline, whoever you booked through, and explain there was a glitch in the system and you’ve been charged twice and demand a refund for one set. You didn’t deliberately buy two sets - you say you ‘somehow bought two sets’. You realised you’d been charged twice once you had a chance to check the ticket email. They’re unlikely to make an issue about it being different railcards. So what anyway if it’s different railcards - it’s presumably the same bank card the tickets have been paid with. This isn’t about you choosing for tickets then wanting a refund for two after the deadline. They’re exactly the same tickets - same train, same time, 2 adults presumably - so it’s obviously a glitch. You’ve been charged for 4 when you tried to buy 2, which is an issue with their online system (wouldn’t have happened in a manned office). Phone up, expect a refund, don’t be apologetic, but say thanks. I can hear you’re emotional about this understandably as it’s a lot of money to you but try to put this to the side when you make the call, your case is a simple one of their system charging you twice (you clearly thought the first payment had not gone through), rather than special pleading. Good luck and I hope they just refund you without a hassle.

RandomMess · 11/09/2021 07:04

Worst case you move the travel dates on one set?

You can do this with advance tickets and the deduct £10

WhatsErFace2020 · 11/09/2021 07:07

Op you will be able to get a refund on the tickets call the customer relations department of train line or better still the train operator you will travel with.

camelfinger · 11/09/2021 07:10

It’s an easy mistake to make. I’d agree that giving them a call is a good idea.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 11/09/2021 07:11

Move the tickets to another date

lurker69 · 11/09/2021 07:19

I don't think all is lost get on to them and try and get a refund and failing that move the dates, I'm sure you will be able to sort something out!
