Beanie hats and bobble hats

AIBU in thinking that the two used to mean quite different types of hat? Looking for a beanie hat (or what I'm sure used to be called a beanie hat) and all I'm getting is bobble hats and/or woolly hats. Searching further I've found that the hat that I want is a 'bucket hat'.

When did this happen? Did it even happen? Do I live in a parallel universe of hat names? Is it an american thing? I've never even heard of a bucket hat until today, and I bought loads of them when the kids were small 20 years ago.

AIBU to think it's all changed? Or am I doing that weird thing when things you are certain are right are actually shown to be wrong like the 't' in sketchers that isn't actually there. (it's skechers)

A beanie has no bobble.

A bobble hat has a bobble.

A bucket hat has a brim and no bobble and isn't made of wool.

As above. A beanie hat is a woolly hat without a bobble, they have never been similar to Bucket hats.
How did you get through the 90’s not knowing what a bucket hat was??

Fifteen years ago, a beanie hat was indeed as you describe: an angular cloche style hat.

My guess is that it changed in the last few years with the rise of a close fitting wool hat sans bobble as a fashion amongst male rap/grunge artists. The word "beanie" became attached to this style instead.

How strange. I seem to get exactly what I'm looking for when I google each different type of hat style.

I've only ever known a beanie as, well, a beanie, a woolly/close-fitting hat without a bobble, going back as far as I can remember to the 90s. Definitely not a bucket hat - that's totally different!

Bucket hats are also quite often just called sun hats for kids.

I agree.

The bucket hat has never been called a beanie in my world.

I've always known it was spelt Skechers, but until recently I'd never heard it said out loud and assumed (because of the absence of a T) that it was pronounced Skeechers.

Probably because I was in my thirties in the 90's and didn't really care what the drably dressed teens called their hats.

I'm still sticking with the age/change theory at the moment.
